Hermosa Family Newsletter
April 15th - 19th
Hornet Families,
It's a great week to be a Hornet! It is crazy to think we are down to our final 5 weeks of school remaining. Please remind your child to finish the year strong!
5th - 8th Grade Dance
Tonight is the 5th-8th Grade Dance from 7:00 - 9:00. STUDENTS MUST BE ELIGIBLE AND HAVE ALL MISSING WORK TURNED IN TO ATTEND.
Truancy & Tardiness
Parents and guardians, even with the end of the year within sight, please do not forget the importance of attendance and being on time. The state expectation is that all students attend school for 90% or more of the entire school year. If you child is below that standard, they are at risk of falling behind. It is also important that your child is on time to school. The school day begins at 7:50. If your child is arriving to school past 7:50 it causes disruptions to the rest of the class. It is also important to teach your child punctuality. This is a life skill that needs to be taught and instilled at a young age.
South Dakota State Assessment
Next week we continue our annual state testing with 3rd-8th grade taking their Math assessments. You can help your student be successful by encouraging them and helping them prepare for each assessment. See below for more information.
Kindergarten Registration Now Open!
If your child will be 5 on or before September 1st, 2024, kindergarten registration for the 2024-25 school year is now open! Please come to the school office Monday-Thursday 7:30-4:00 to get registered and to receive more information about Summer Kinder Camp, Kindergarten Screening, Expectations, Junior Kindergarten, and Preschool for students 3-4 years old by September 1st, 2024.

2023-24 South Dakota State Assessments
As we start to see the end of the school year approaching, it is time for our annual state testing. Every year, the state requires all 3rd-8th grade students to test in ELA and Math, and all 5th and 8th grade students to test in Science. You can find our parent letter below and the testing schedule.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman
The first week of the State Assessment went well! We are very proud of our students for using grit and determination to try their hardest. This week we completed ELA and next week students will be assessed on Math. Overall, outlooks have been high for the State Assessment with minimal complaining--we will take it!
Sickness is in the air and we will have a lot of students making up tests which will be done April 29th - May 2nd. Help keep your children healthy by encouraging them to drink plenty of water, get fresh air when the weather is nice, wash their hands and get plenty of rest.
This week for the few classroom counseling lessons I was able to have, 8th graders retook their Matchmaker Test on South Dakota My Life -- they first did this in 6th grade and many students have changed since. For the rest of the school year, 8th graders will be researching one career they matched with to present it to the class. 1st grade learned how to say the problem in our Solving Problems Unit with Second Step. Kindergarten is almost ready for solutions to problems, but first learned we need to be regulated before we can fix a problem. If we try to fix a problem when we are having a strong emotion, many times we can make the problem worse.
Next week in classroom counseling lessons, 7th graders will "Save Sam" which is a fun activity centered around working together as a team. Towards the end of the school year, students can get tired of one another. It's always a good to be reminded how to work together with our partners and be respectful. 6th grade will resume their What Emotions Tell Us lesson with Second Step, and then we will begin to understand how emotions effect our brain. 3rd will be introduced to the problem solving steps (THINK) and 2nd grade will brainstorm solutions to problems in our Solve the Problem Units.
Enjoy the weekend!
