From the Principal...
Dear Flower Valley Community,
It was a wonderful week at Flower Valley. We had an amazing author's visit from Rosa Chang who wrote My Indigo World, which was awarded the National Science Foundation STEM book of 2023. Students learned about the history of the color blue from a Korean American perspective. Ms. Chang also held a workshop for all of our 3rd grader students about creating natural dyes, which aligns with their STEM day activity next week. The students had a blast!
Our kindergarteners also had an exciting visit from the Reptile Guy. We had lizards, bearded dragons, pythons, and so much more!
The week ahead brings our annual STEM Day event where all of our students will participate in a fun and educational STEM experience. They will also be able to visit the arcade that our 4th graders will be creating and leading. Check out this link to find out more about the inspiration for the arcade and STEM Day.
This week's newsletter contains important information about STEM Day, our town hall meetings, International Night, a ParentVue update, and our community conversation which is coming up April 25th.
This will be the last newsletter until after spring break. I hope everyone has a restful spring break. Fingers crossed we will have beautiful weather!
With Firefly Pride!

Our annual FVES STEM Day is quickly approaching. It is Friday, March 22nd! Take a look below at all of the fun our student are going to have!
- Kindergarten: The Kindergarteners will be trying to thwart the Big Bad Wolf and build a house for the 3 Little Pigs.
- 1st Grade: Our 1st graders are going to have some fun coding on Kodable.com.
- 2nd Grade: 2nd graders will be designing a marble run with obstacles a marble must successfully go through.
- 3rd Grade: Third grade will be exploring dyes that use natural resources. After learning about the history of natural dyes and how the process works, each student will dye a fabric bag to take home.

- 5th Grade:
International Night and Art Expo: April 15th at RHS 6:30-8:00
Please join us in celebrating the cultural diversity of our school community at Flower Valley’s International Night and Art Expo. It will be on Monday April 15th at 6:30 pm in the Rockville High School Auditorium. All students will sing songs from around the world. Families are encouraged to bring a dish to share and a display board telling us about your culture. Please see the linked Google Form here and the attached flyer for more information. We are looking forward to sharing this wonderful evening with you.
Student Town Hall Meetings
We wanted to share the information we discussed with students at our town hall meetings. Every grade level shared what they have experienced that shows they are cared for at Flower Valley and what things make them feel unsafe or unhappy. We began our town halls by discussing those topics that students shared with us, and then we framed ongoing learning around how to create a community of care in our school. The slides for the town halls can be found here.
ParentVue 2024
Lost and Found
Please remind your child to check the lost and found. We have so many amazing items wanting to be reunited with their owners! Parents are also welcome to come take a look to see if there are any lost treasures from your home. We will be donating any unclaimed items during spring break.
April 25th: Community Conversation at FVES
Please join us at FVES in the All Purpose Room to engage in a community conversation about creating and nurturing an inclusive environment for all at Flower Valley. Changes to some of the long held traditions at FVES have created an opportunity for us to explore ways to be more inclusive of all students and families in our community. During the community conversation, we will discuss how our demographics have changed over the past decade as well as collaborate about how Flower Valley traditions can continue to nurture an inclusive environment for all of our students and families. Our partners in the MCPS Equity Office will be joining us for this important conversation. We will also have interpreters present for the evening.
Mulch Sale and FVES Beautification
Kindergarten Enrollment
Kindergarten enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year will open March 18th. Details regarding the process can be accessed here. MCPS is not setting aside time from the school day for kindergarten orientation this year; however, Flower Valley will be providing multiple opportunities for school tours,. We will also host an information evening where families can visit the kindergarten classes and meet all of the teachers prior to the start of school. We will be reaching out to families of incoming kindergarteners enrolled for the 2024-2025 school year later in the spring to provide details about school tours, kindergarten play dates, and the kindergarten information night event.
