Community Crew News #30
March 15th, 2024
Greetings Conway Community!
As an Expeditionary Learning school, we create structures that celebrate and foster CREW, our habits of character, and supports our students to become effective learners, and ethical people. One of those structures is our monthly DEN meetings. During this monthly CREW/DEN meeting, our school community lives up to the spirit of CREW and provides authentic learning opportunities for our students to mentor younger learners. They come together in multi-age crews with the same den leader during their entire length of their time at Conway, and grow into a very special Crew rooted in a deep sense of belonging. Our older students pick up younger students at their classrooms and escort them, often hand in hand, to their den teacher. It truly is a magical experience for our learners. This year, we are focused on building knowledge around our Expeditionary Learning Design Principles. This month, Primacy of Self Discovery guided our learning. Please ask your learner about the Den meeting they attended this week.
Pizza with the Principal
Every few month I have the pleasure of hosting a special lunch with our students, Pizza with the Principal. At 11:10am, I host 3rd - 6th grade students and 12:00pm TK -2nd grade students get treated to this special event. Pizza is ordered for just them, they receive a special prize from PTA, and we play games. Today we played Pictionary on the white board. Our students are creative, fun, and so smart. I was so impressed by their drawings and guesses.
As an Expeditionary Learning School, we explicitly plan experiences that address and celebrate our EPIC habits of character. These celebratory events support our learners in becoming ethical people through their actions.
Students are selected by their teachers to attend and others are selected from our school-wide HOPPER where students submit their COUGAR PAWS they earn for demonstrating one of our character traits.
CREW TOWN HALL MEETING
I am sure you have heard of the state budget shortfalls that are impacting schools across our state. EUSD is no exception. As an Expeditionary Learning School, our goal is to continue to build on solid practices, maintain in our EL Model, and re-imagine key structures. I invite you to stay informed, join the conversation and hear what we are planning in order to meet the needs of all our learners. Have your questions answered and learn how you can help too. Join me Monday, 3/18/24 at 3pm in our library.
6th Grade Spelling Bee
Congratulations 6th grade Olive Chrones! Our first ever student to complete in the Scripps San Diego County Spelling Bee held at the Jackie Robinson YMCA this Thursday. She competed against eighty 6th - 8th grade top students from around the county. Way to be EPIC Olive.
Hiring Event
EUSD is hosting two hiring events next week at the district office. From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, HR team members will guide individuals through the application process, including any necessary job assessments for numerous classified positions, including school library technician, electrician, nutrition assistant, bilingual school clerk, licensed vocational nurse, speech language pathology assistant, various substitute opportunities, and more.
It is with sadness to say that our librarian will return to her home state of Montana soon. Although she was with us for a short time, in that time, she has become part of our Conway Crew and happy she will return home to family.
This mean that Conway is looking to hire a librarian soon. If you have experience and looking to join an EPIC staff Crew, our library needs you! Please attend the hiring event at EUSD on Monday to inquire about the librarian position.
Communication is extremely important to everyone at our EPIC school. Please make sure to scroll all the way through the weekly message. If you miss a message, you can view all communication on our website under "NEWS".
I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire students to discover their unlimited potential through Excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, and Compassion. Together we are creating an EPIC school.
We are in this together and believe, We Are Crew, not passengers.
