April 2024

🧁 From the Principal 🍭
Hello Mohawk Families,
Beginning on April 8th, students will be taking the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). Elementary students in grades 3-5 will be assessed on Michigan’s current content standards in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies. All students in grades 3-5 will take the ELA and Math test. Fifth grade will also take a science and social studies test. These tests will be given online.
It is imperative that students are present for these tests. See the M-STEP testing calendar below and review the information for parents. Please try to avoid scheduling appointments on testing days. We are dedicated to improving in all areas of the curriculum and use this data to drive our instruction. We maintain high academic standards so your child with receive the best education.
I want to thank you for all of your continued support this year. I can't express to you enough how much I love our Mohawk Community and how thankful I am to be a part of it. I hope you have an enjoyable spring break and I look forward to the next few weeks as we head toward the end of the year.
Educationally yours,
Ms. Andrea Verellen
Principal

Solar Eclipse
On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross the continental United States, providing an exciting and breathtaking opportunity for observation and science. A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the sun. This is the second time in a decade we have had an eclipse. The next one will be in 2044 so it is a momentous event.
The partial eclipse will begin at 1:59pm, totality will occur at 3:13pm with max at 3:15pm. The eclipse will end at 3:17pm and will return to a partial eclipse until 4:29pm. Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, (3:13-3:17) when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is NOT safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.
Therefore, students will not be going outside after 1:59pm. Classes can watch the eclipse via NASA on the Smartboard. Dismissal will be a concern so please talk with your child about the dangers of looking directly into the sun.
The NASA website is full of useful information in case you would like to share it with your student(s).
M-STEP
Below are the testing windows for each grade level. It is helpful to refrain from scheduling doctor/dentist appointments or any other activities which would require your child to miss school during the testing window. Please check the schedule for details.
All 3rd through 5th grade classes will be exposed to the testing format prior to the testing window. The directions below explain how you can access practice test items and view student-narrated video tutorials from home. You must use Google Chrome as your web browser when accessing the site.
