Brown School Buzz
December 5, 2023

Dear Families,
Spring happenings are under way at the Brown School! Though the warmer weather has finally arrived, we are still firmly planted in the teaching and learning of this year. Our third grade completed their Language Arts MCAS last week, and first graders have been hosting parents to showcase their own Language Arts learning. We are also keenly aware of students who will be moving on to fourth grade in August, as well as new students coming our way!
Last week we hosted our Kindergarten Orientation for parents who will have a student starting at the Brown School in August, and our third grade parents had a Fourth Grade Orientation at Village School last night. Read on to hear more about upcoming events including, Theme Days next week and Meet the Author Night!
Please reach out if I can help answer any questions you may have about your child's transition or any part of their learning experience at Brown.
Happy Spring to All!
Mary
MTSS Development in Action
Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
Our 24-25 School Improvement Plan is currently being assessed by staff and our progress will be analyzed by our coaches and School Advisory Council. Four of the goals in the plan are directly related to MTSS development for both academic and social-emotional growth. These include:
1. All educators facilitating ELA instruction (Classroom teachers, special educators, ELL) will be given multiple opportunities to study, observe and implement the Wit and Wisdom curriculum.
(*This is our Tier 1 Reading and Writing curriculum as we are prioritizing professional learning for our teachers.)
2. Implementation of Responsive Classroom components and pillars to include but not limited to: Morning Meeting (Greeting, Activity, Share Morning Message), Quiet Time, Take a break Space, etc. as a Tier 1 Social Emotional Support for all students.
(*This is one of our Tier 1 Social Emotional Learning universal practices.)
3. Further develop our Professional Learning Communities (Data Mtg protocols, shared strategies, share research and instructional strategies etc)
(*The Professional Learning Community is central to MTSS development and success.)
4. Implement data-informed small math intervention groups based on instructional area of need during the math block.
(*While our WIN time addresses specific Reading needs, we did not have a system or schedule for addressing our students' math needs outside of the regular Math Block. This was a primary goal this year.)
We are hoping to have all of our feedback from staff and assessment data collected and organized to inform our next School Improvement Plan. The 25-26 Plan will be submitted to the School Committee Meeting on May 15. Stay tuned for more details on how we will continue to develop our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support to increase student success, as well as opportunities for teacher learning and development in the coming years ahead.

School Calendar Reminder
As a reminder, THIS FRIDAY IS AN EARLY DISMISSAL day in observance of Good Friday. Please be sure your child knows his/her dismissal plan. Also as a reminder, we will be making up some of our missed time in November next week.
*April 21-22-NO SCHOOL
*April 23-25-SCHOOL IS IN SESSION
Attendance
If your child will be absent for any of the days next week, you can use THIS EMAIL to let us know, and those absences will be excused.
Classroom Instruction
Classes will continue to be taught, and make-up work will be provided upon a child's return to school. While we will continue our learning, we have decided that there will not be any assessments given during the make-up weeks. If your child will be absent, he/she should check in with the classroom teacher when returning to school. We understand plans were made and some students will be absent next week, we want to keep challenging and teaching students who are present, while not overwhelming students who may be traveling.
With nine weeks of school to go, we are also planning end-of-the-year dates including the Fun Run and Field Day. Please be sure to mark your calendars as dates are posted.
For your planning purposes for the end of this year and the start of next year, please check out this year's calendar and next year's calendar approved in February.

Even though we will be continuing our learning next week, we'll also be having a little Spirit Week fun. All students are welcome to join the fun on Beach day, Hero Day and Color Day next week!
Music in our Schools Month Rocked!!
Musicians from our schools and greater community performed live music in our lobby every morning for the month of March. Students were able to appreciate and enjoy so many genres and instruments! From piano and trombone players to orchestras and beautiful voices, we are grateful to all those who volunteered to help make our Music in our Schools Month a great success. Special thanks to Music Teacher Eileen D'Amour for her coordination and leadership to bring this experience to our school!
And speaking of music.....
Kudos to our Kindergartners on their first Brown School Concert! Their voices and hand motions were fantastic! Thanks again to Ms. D'Amour for all her work!

LOST AND FOUND
Every year around this time, we count on reliable signs of spring. For some, it's the blooming forsythia, for others it's lacrosse and baseball seasons, and here at the Brown School, one sure sign is that our Lost and Found is overflowing! :-). It's true. This is the time of year when kids wear their spring jacket or sweatshirt for the chilly mornings, and shed them sometime during the day. They can appear anywhere from the lunchroom, to the playground to the restrooms. Please stop by our Lost and found if you are missing something. Here is just a very small sample of some of the items just waiting to be claimed.
