Superintendent Update
Dear Nashoba Community,
Each year, the Nashoba Regional School Committee convenes to conduct a public hearing and decide on whether to enable students from neighboring districts to enroll in our schools through the school choice program. On Wednesday, April 24, 2024 the Committee voted to approve the Superintendent's recommendation to close school choice enrollment for specific grades, while maintaining limited availability for others. This decision was reached after careful consideration of data presented during the school committee meeting on April 10, 2024. You can view the presentation by going to the school committee web page at NRSD.net. To gain insight into the discussions that shaped this decision.
The school committee voted to approve the Superintendent’s recommendation to close school choice as follows:
Florence Sawyer School: Close grades Kindergarten, one, two, four and six
Mary Rowlandson Elementary: Close for all grades
Luther Burbank Middle School: Close grades six and seven
Center School: Close all grades
Hale Middle School: Close grade six
The school committee voted to approve the Superintendent’s recommendation to open school choice and limit the number of students as follows:
Florence Sawyer School: 3rd(4 students), 5th(2 students), 7th(4 students), and 8th(4 students)
Luther Burbank Middle School: 8th(4 students)
Hale School: 7th(4 students), 8th(4 students)
NRHS: 9th (4students), 10th (4 students), 11th (4 students), 12th (4 students)
No more than eleven students district wide in 8th grade
We will open the application window for School Choice on Friday, May 10, 2024. It will remain open until Friday, May 31,2024 at 12:00 p.m. Applications received by that date will be considered for school choice. Applications received after the May 31, 2024 deadline will not be accepted for consideration. If a lottery is needed for any grade, the lottery will be held on June 5th at 10:00 am
Thank you for all of your support. Have a wonderful weekend.
Peace,
Kirk Downing

State Seal of Biliteracy Awards, Congratulations NRHS Students
The State Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state-approved districts that recognize high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The State Seal of Biliteracy acknowledges the value of academic success and the tangible benefits of multilingualism. This year marks the second year the Nashoba Regional School District has participated in the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy. Graduating seniors who meet the rigorous requirements for the State Seal of Biliteracy will receive a seal on their high school transcript upon graduation. This year, we had 27 students take 29 tests in 9 languages across grades 9-12. Wow!
To date, 18 students have earned the Seal this year, with more recipients to be named once Advanced Placement (AP) exam results are available in July. This is twice as many as last year!
Congratulations to the following Nashoba Regional High School SENIORS who have already earned the Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy or The Massachusetts State Seal of Biliteracy With Distinction Award!

NRHS Juniors Attend Performance of Fences at Trinity Repertory Theater
As part of their American Literature courses this year, Nashoba Regional High School juniors studied themes, complex character, and symbolism using August Wilson's play Fences as an anchor text. This study culminated in a whole-grade field trip to watch a live performance at the Trinity Repertory Theater in Providence, RI this past Wednesday. Students raved about the performance and led discussions about directorial decisions, acting choices, symbolic stage design, and the power of live theater!
A consistent question from students was: "Can we do this again?" to the delight of English department head Kim Rocha, who organized this curriculum extension, with the full support and enthusiasm of the English department, educators throughout the high school, and administration.
