National Speech-Language-Hearing Month
The month of May is recognized as National Speech-Language-Hearing Month. This year the motto is: Timely Intervention Is Key to Success.
Speech and language disorders rank among the most common disabilities that impact children, students and families. There are less than 2,000 speech and language pathologists in the state of Oregon. Celebrate Cynthia, our NBHS building speech and language pathologist, on National SLP day, which is May 18th, 2024. Speech is the ability to produce speech sounds using the mouth, lips, and tongue. A child may make mistakes with sounds in words, repeat sounds and words, or be difficult to understand. Language is the ability to use and put words together—and to understand others’ words. A child’s ability to communicate effectively is critical to their learning, future reading and writing success, academic performance, social interactions, and even their behavior. Between birth and 3 years of age, 80% of a child’s brain development occurs. Speech and language disorders are evaluated and treated by speech-language pathologists.
Regular Attendance Matters
Spring is here! The birds are singing and the sun is shining-don’t let those distractions keep you from school!
Missing school means that valuable instructional time is lost – This adds up faster than you might think. What seems like an isolated day here and there can have a great impact on a student's progress and ability towards mastering key concepts that they are expected to learn. This can have serious consequences for a student's academic success.
Chronic absenteeism skyrocketed during the pandemic. And while data shows that it's coming back down, it still has a long way to go. A student is chronically absent when they've missed 10% or more of the school year. This includes both excused and unexcused absences.
We know that it is difficult to be successful in classes when you're missing that much class time. Our goal at North Bend High School is to have students present in class 92% of the time. This works out to two days a month. We know that grades improve when a student's attendance rate is high.
Put this on your calendar!
Expanded Options College Classes for 2024-2025 School Year
Any junior wishing to take classes at SOCC next fall through our Expanded Options program will have the opportunity to submit an application to have the class paid for; applications can be picked up in Student Services. Only a set amount of funds are available, so it is smart to get an application in as soon as possible.
See your Counselor of you need assistance.
NBHS Poetry Slam 2024
The annual NBHS Poetry Slam will happen at lunch on May 23rd in the school library. Students will be performing unique and personal poems that they have written. We look forward to having this event and supporting our school's poets!
THE ONE ACT PLAY THAT GOES WRONG
Comedy Takes Center Stage!
North Bend High School is proud to announce the Coos County premier of the delightful farce THE ONE ACT PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, a play within a play written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields. This uproariously funny show won England’s Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 2015. This is a hilarious, sidesplitting, delightful production, sure to please all audiences!
This backstage farce follows an amateur drama society as they valiantly struggle to get through their murder mystery without succumbing to the disasters surrounding them: falling set pieces, sticking doors, missed cues, and anything covered under Murphy’s Law.
While the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society is attempting to present Susie H.K. Brideswell's Murder at Haversham Manor, and everything - well- goes wrong. It's easy to see where this farce is headed, and just how committed both playwrights Lewis, Sayer and Shields and our own North Bend Drama Dogs are to this theatrical device.
The show opens Saturday, May 11th, and runs through Sunday, May 19th. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7 pm, with a Sunday matiness at 2 pm. Doors open ½ hour prior to the show. Please note, there is only one Friday performance.

Just Another Day at School.
On this day, the lunch activity was "Soak a Senior", but students could soak whoever they wanted to. Students, teachers and administration all got to enjoy a little cold water in the courtyard.
