What Is Important about Read Across America Week?
Read Across America Week will be Monday through Friday. We will have fun dress up days, volunteer readers in classrooms, and our Book Fair. What do you, as a parent, need to know about this week? 1. It highlights the value of reading. Celebrations reflect priorities. RAA Week helps our children know how important it is to read. Some children naturally love to read and find it enjoyable while for others, it can be a struggle. This week will highlight different ways that books can be "Game Changers" in their lives. Whether through sports or famous people or animals or the arts, there are many ways kids can connect their interest with reading. I have seen reluctant readers find a genre or author that they enjoy and voraciously read everything they can find about that topic or by that author. (I think many of us, as adults, are the same way.) This week will help them find lots of different kinds of books. 2. It provides access to new books. Through our Book Fair, families will have the opportunity to buy books to take home and keep. Those books will most likely be passed on to other family members or donated to good causes for others to enjoy. In addition, all profits from our Book Fair are used to purchase additional books for our school library that children can check out in the future. We know that kids read more when they have easy access to books. We want to make that opportunity available for all our students. 3. Know what's happening this week. Here is the schedule of our dress up days:
Monday--Sports is a Game Changer--Wear a team shirt or jersey!
Tuesday--People are Game Changers--Dress as your future career!
Wednesday--Animals are Game Changers--Wear animals prints or shirt with an animal!
Thursday--Arts are Game Changers--Wear as many colors and patterns as you can!
Friday--Books are Game Changers--Dress as your favorite Book Character!
Hours for the Book Fair are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8:00-1:30. On Wednesday, it will also be open from 3:00-5:00. It will be open on Friday from 8:00-11:00. Please use eWallet or card (credit, debit, gift card, etc.) to make purchases. Cash will only be accepted on Wednesday. For more information and to set up your child's eWallet, go to our Cherry Park Scholastic Books Website: https://bookfairs.scholastic.com/bf/cherryparkelementary2
Reading really is a game changer for all of us. It makes a huge difference in a child's achievement and their understanding of the world around him. Thanks for supporting your child's reading each day and for your support of our school.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness
