Canaan Middle School Update
March 8th, 2024
Principal Corner
Dear Canaan Middle School Families,
It has been an eventful past couple of weeks at Canaan Middle School, filled with exciting activities and academic achievements. Here are some highlights from the past couple of weeks:
CMS Play and MAP Assessments: We are thrilled to announce the successful return of the CMS play, showcasing the incredible talents of our students. Additionally, students have been diligently completing their MAP assessments. We are immensely proud of their efforts and accomplishments.
STEM and Library Collaboration: Our STEM and library classes collaborated to create a captivating Forest Exhibit. This interdisciplinary project not only fostered creativity but also enhanced students' learning experiences. Stay tuned for more details and information on this exciting collaboration.
WIN Classes: I had the pleasure of visiting most WIN classes to engage students in discussions about finishing the academic year on a high note. We emphasized the importance of being kind, caring, and respectful in our daily interactions. Let's continue to "elevate" our actions and make a positive impact every day. Students received or will receive wrist band as a reminder of the conversation!
Upcoming Events:
-Some of our students will have the opportunity to attend a guest speaker session during WIN periods, focusing on the intriguing topic of flight. This promises to be an enriching experience for all involved.-As we approach March 15th, we are reminded that it marks the end of the 3rd nine weeks. We encourage all students to finish the quarter strong and strive for academic success.
-A friendly reminder that there will be no school on March 19th due to a staff professional development day.
Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in the Canaan Middle School community. Together, we can nurture the academic and personal growth of our students, preparing them for success both inside and outside the classroom.
Warm regards,
Mr. Walter, Principal

5th Grade Update
Students discovered "the reason for the seasons" and how "day turns into night" by simulating the revolution of the Earth around the sun and the rotation of Earth on its axis. Groups worked together using a globe and flashlight to demonstrate how the Sun's direct and indirect rays on Earth's northern and southern hemispheres determine the season being experienced. We will wrap up our Earth and Space Unit next week as we "force" ourselves into the Physical Science Unit.
Students will complete a study guide for the Earth and Space Unit to prepare for a unit test to be taken at the end of next week. Look for details on the online planner.
6th Grade Update
Next Friday, March 15th we will have our first official Camp Oty'Okwa meeting with our 6th graders. Please be on the lookout in their red take home folders for a brochure and permission slip that has lots of important dates and information about this long standing JA tradition.
