MST Weekly Update
March 15, 2024

Good afternoon to all of our MST family members.
This week we had a nice reminder that spring will soon be here. Actually, Tuesday will be the first official day of spring. This week our students had some fun with a St. Patrick's Day theme. We welcomed new members to the National Technical Honor Society and the Criminal Justice students continued to prepare for their upcoming mock disaster drill.
Also, this week you will see a message regarding morning drop-off and student safety. Please be sure to read that carefully. The Peter Millimet Writing Contest is now open, and students can submit their work for the possibility of winning a cash prize. A reminder that the Hannaford Helps Schools program has begun, and you can help raise money for MST by shopping there.
A reminder that there is no school for students on Monday 3/18, it is a teacher workshop day. Have a happy first week of spring!
Morning Drop Off Reminder
This topic has been addressed before, but it seems like it is time to remind everyone of proper protocol in the morning when dropping off students. This morning, I observed a car passing by others that were dropping off students, nearly hitting a student who was about to cross the street. That car then pulled into the loop right in front of school to drop off a student. This type of driving could have resulted in serious injury to one or more students.
If you are dropping off a student in the front of the building in the morning, all we ask is the following:
- Use of the main road is for rapid drop-offs not requiring any change of driver, etc.
- Have your student exit the car carefully and look both ways before crossing the road.
- If you are not the first car in line, please wait in line until the cars in front of you leave before you leave. DO NOT pull out and pass other cars dropping off students.
- If you need a longer period of time for a drop-off, please pull into the parking lot down below and drop off your child there.
- If you need to drop off a student in the loop at the front door (medical reason for example), please go around the back of the building and drive around to the loop rather than passing cars in the roadway.
If problems continue, we will go back to the method we used last year where we blocked the roadway and diverted all drop-offs to the lower parking lot.
Thank you for keeping our students safe.
MST-HS National Technical Honor Society Members
"National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) is the honor society for Career & Technical Education (CTE). It has been recognizing outstanding student achievement in CTE since 1984. Having served over one million members in secondary and postsecondary chapters across the country and beyond, NTHS continues to support the next generation of skilled workers and leaders through chapter activities built around our Core Four Objectives of career development, leadership development, service, and recognition."
We congratulate the members within our own school community who have been nominated and accepted into this prestigious organization.
Junior Class Leprechaun Fundraiser
This week, the junior class held a penny wars fundraiser. Five staff members agreed to take part in this activity in which each staff member had a container with their name on it. Students were able to deposit coins or bills into the jars, with every penny being a vote for the person that they wanted to see wear leprechaun outfit on Friday. Mr. Puglisi jumped out to an early lead and remained in the lead almost to the end. Somehow, however, at the last moments of the competition Mr. Bowe took the lead and won. He looked so festive in his leprechaun outfit!
Peter Millimet Creative Writing Contest
MST is pleased to announce that the Peter Millimet Writing Contest is now open and is accepting submissions through the NH Charitable website. All high school students are eligible and encouraged to apply.
The Peter Millimet Creative Writing Fund will award cash prizes – $500 first prize; $300 second prize; $200 third prize; $100 runner(s) up – to Manchester high school students who have demonstrated strong interest in creative writing, with a particular focus on poetry.
Students can electronically submit up to 3 entries (poetry is preferred) for consideration. Winners will be selected based on the overall body of the work submitted, not necessarily a single piece. Submissions will be judged by Alice Fogel, former New Hampshire Poet Laureate.
We encourage the widest variety of students to participate. To enter the Peter Millimet Creative Writing Contest, visit www.nhcf.org/millimet
The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 19, 2024. A list of winners from your school will be sent to you by the end of May so that you might announce them at your school’s award ceremony, or in any other way you wish. Checks will be mailed directly to the students.
Students do not need to be pursuing post-secondary education to participate in this writing contest, nor do they need to be seniors; this contest is open to students in grades 9-12. The awards are cash prizes, not scholarships, for recipients to use however they choose.
Criminal Justice Investigations Continue
Students in Criminal Justice 1 continue to prepare for our Mock Disaster Event! Students analyzed hair and fiber samples and were assessed on their findings. The students in the Criminal Justice classes were also trained by Lt. Roy in the use of fire extinguishers. This training was completed using a digital fire extinguishing simulator.
Hannaford Helps Schools
Once again this year, we are participating in Hannaford Helps Schools program!
Through this program, shoppers can earn 3 School Dollars for every 4 participating products purchased. At checkout, customers will receive a School Dollar printout they can use to donate to any school in this program.
