Winter 23-24
Welcome to our libraries!
Each library in our district is a warm and welcoming space.
Each is staffed with a Library Paraprofessional (or two) and managed by our District Library Media Specialist, Kathy Retzke.

BOOK FAIRS
Book Fairs take place in our school district in the fall and the spring. They are matched up with Parent Conferences so that parents can easily attend. Book Fairs are fundraisers. In the fall, the money that is raised goes toward helping build teachers' classroom libraries as well as supporting each building's library.
In the spring, profits are given back to the students through reading incentives they can choose to participate in. This year we had over 300 students participating in our reading incentive. If they read 400 minutes they earned $7.00 for the book fair, and if they read 800 minutes they earned $14.00. We gave back close to $4000 in books to our students.
Book Fair profits also help fund our classroom libraries, reading incentives, Battle of the Books program, our elementary book giveaway program, raffle baskets at events and improvements to all of our libraries. Thank you to all of the families that support us with their purchases!
Thank you to all of our families that supported our spring book fair!
Battle of the Books - BOB
ALL THE COOL KIDS ARE READING!
Battle of the Books (BOB), is a statewide program organized by the Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association. This year, 487 teams competed across the elementary, middle, and high school levels in Wisconsin. Our school district was proud to host teams at all of our elementary buildings and the middle school. The program was run at Lakeview Elementary for many years before it went district wide last year. In a single year we increased our students' participation in this event by 73%!
Students are placed on teams of up to 4 people. Their job is to read 20 books and be prepared to answer questions on them. They learn to take notes, pay attention to details, problem solve and work as a team. Teams are created right around Thanksgiving with team meetings taking place in December, January and early February. Each building then hosts a Battle in which the teams compete against each other to be the TOP DOGS in their building.
This year, our building battles took place the week of February 12th. Congratulations to the following teams who then went on to take the statewide test the week of February 19th.
Lakeview Elementary
Team C.E.S. made up of Charli Kordosky, Evie Tharp, and Savannah Schneider ruled the day at Lakeview Elementary. They beat out four other teams for the top spot.
Lincoln Elementary
This team, formerly known as the Reading Rhinos, won overall last year. They came back this year for a repeat performance as the Returning Rhinos to win again. It was a very exciting match as it was a tie breaker that went into sudden death overtime. It took 5 more rounds before the Rhinos finally defeated the Book Nerds. Congratulations to Owen Pinzino, Zeb Davis, J.J. DeLazzer, and Camden Kachel.
Washington Elementary
The mighty duo of Amaury Garcia and Tucker Kurowski made up the victorious Golden Penguins, as they beat six other teams at Washington. This team also brought home the bragging rights for Washington as they were the top team this year between the three elementary schools.
BOB at Whitewater Middle School
These are three of the teams that represented the middle school along with Mrs. Retzke. The team in the middle, The Final Brain Cell, used all they had to beat out five other teams to rule the cool at the Middle School. Congratulations to Virginia Nelson, Letty Trautman, and Vivian Harris. These 8th grade ladies, along with the other 8th grade team to the right, The Cool Kids Club, are the reason we will most likely be hosting a High School team next year!
Our High School Library
Our High School library is a multi-purpose zone for staff and students alike. The space is used for study halls assigned for seniors who are performing well in their classes, and it is often used by staff for meetings, printing, and book checkout and reading days. Aside from that, students can use the space to get technology help for the upkeep of their chromebooks and other needs. The space continues to help students become better readers and learners.
