National Honor Society
Lynn Dyer, National Honor Society-National Scholarship Finalist, attended the Trailblazing Leadership Week in Washington, DC. During this conference, Lynn attended different seminars that focused on "Student Voice" in our schools and communities. Along with the 50 National Assistant Principals of the Year, 25 National Honor Society Advisers, and the 24 other National Scholarship Finalist discussions were had as to how schools and communities can work to let student voices be heard and used to guide instruction and practices within our schools and communities. After registration on Wednesday, a welcome activity was held and then an opening reception was attended. The next day, discussions began with small groups separating out and using a Fishbowl Method to brainstorm about current educational issues. After this session, Chris Chism presented about the use of AI in the classroom and its impact on education. Students, Advisers, and Assistant Principals then worked with chatGPT to see its everyday uses. Next on the agenda was a trip to the White House where the 100 guests had an open forum discussion with 3 top officials from the Department of Education. Students and Advisers then enjoyed an evening out touring the National Portrait Gallery and then had dinner and played mini-golf. On Friday, 4 breakout sessions were attended; Climate and Culture, Inclusive Leadership, Student Learning Experiences, and Impacting Your Community. That evening was the Gala of Excellence where Lynn and the other 24 students were recognized and 5 additional scholarships were awarded. Tamir Harper, an education advocate, was the keynote speaker. On Saturday, the speakers presented about "Making Connections" and what happens "Beyond NHS." The wrap up brought the students back to their home-base table where a final activity was completed. Lynn received the National Honor Society Finalist Scholarship valued at $5625. 17,000 students applied for a National Honor Society Scholarship this year and Lynn was in the top 25. She plans to attend Northwest Missouri State University in the Fall.
