Our end of the year testing is here! It is important that students are here each day on time, get a good night's rest, and eat a good breakfast. These tests will show all of the learning that has happened this year and are an important measure of you student's progress.

On May 6th, students from Fairhaven will participate in Kids Run the OC. In order to get ready, the team meets once a week to work up their endurance with the equivalent of at least one mile each week and then will run the final mile as part of the OC marathon opening ceremonies. After it is all done they will have run the same distance as a marathon- 26.2 miles.

El 6 de mayo, los estudiantes de Fairhaven participarán en Kids Run the OC. For the month of March, our AVID Ambassadors went into classrooms to share about our school spirit day "Falcons are as Good as Gold", where students could wear green, gold and yellow. They also collaborated with one another to redesign our school's Student Store, where they developed multiple proposals to increase the layout efficiency, which they then presented to Mrs. Papacosta for feedback.

For the month of April, they worked with our school counselor, Ms. Cathy, to encourage students to "Purple Up." They made posters and helped spread awareness to support students from military families. They also created banners to promote our next school spirit day, "Dress for Success", where students will be able to come to school dressed as their future career.

Durante el mes de marzo, nuestros embajadores de AVID fueron a las aulas para compartir sobre nuestro día del espíritu escolar "Los halcones son tan buenos como el oro", donde los estudiantes podían vestir de verde, oro y amarillo. OUSD is looking for certificated substitute teachers to help our elementary and secondary schools. If you have a bachelor’s degree, they can help you through the process to become a substitute and support our schools. We currently have substitute positions available immediately and the current pay is $160.10 for the full-day (tier 1) and can go up to $195.33 for the full day (tier 2). This is a great position for any person with a bachelor’s degree looking to help our schools while earning extra income.

The State Supreme Court concluded in the 1984 case of Hartzell v. Connell, "that all educational activities carried on by public school districts, extra-curricular as well as curricula, must be without cost to the students who participate in such activities." This same ruling found that "mandatory fees for participating in such extra-curricular activities such as drama, music, and athletic competition were illegal under the State Constitution." Furthermore, they also rejected the argument that "fees could be charged so long as the district waived fees for students who were financially unable to pay." Recent proposed legislation includes reimbursement with interest for any illegally-collected fees as well as a district sanction.
