Eagle Connection #26
Week of March 4 - March 9, 2024
Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families! Here are updates for the week of March 4-9, 2024. You can find full details on our Eagle Connection page: https://www.smore.com/n/fgxw2
We want to remind you that there is no school for students on Tuesday due to Election Day.
This week we are celebrating national Read Across America week. This week celebrates great children’s books, authors, and the joy of reading. We have special activities planned including fun dress up days. We will begin on Monday with “Hats off to Reading” day where we celebrate the joy of reading by wearing hats. We’ve got special dress up days each day, and you can see our Eagle Connection and ClassDojo pages for full detail.
Thanks for reading with your children in The World According to Humphrey. We’ve heard so many stories of kids enjoying listening to parents read to them, of brothers and sisters who also argue about who gets to go first, and of how Humphrey’s school is a lot like ours. Everyone is enjoying our new hamster, and we’re voting for her name tomorrow. Friday’s reading assignment was to read chapters 7 and 8. If you can’t find time to read, your child can also listen along as Mrs. Minick reads these chapters on our WE READ page. Link: https://www.smore.com/n/dp5tk
Finally, as the calendar turns to March, we’d like to remind families who are paying for field trips on the monthly installment plan that the March $10 payment is now due. This is the final payment, and it can be made to your teacher or in our online portal. If you are paying online, note the system will not reflect your previous payments, but Mrs. Rebekah has documented those at school. If you have a question, please call our office or call in with our office. If you aren’t able to make your payment, please reach out to your teacher who can share information about what to do.
Our PTO invites you to support our school by dining at Almost at the Lake restaurant on Thursday, March 7 between 5-9 pm. All you have to do is mention Wilkesboro Elementary School when ordering for dine in or take out, and a portion of sales will be donated to our school. These spirit nights help generate ongoing funds to support student programming.
We are still taking orders for our 2024 yearbook. You can order a yearbook by returning the envelope and payment to school OR by ordering directly online from our website by March 15. Link: https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1871573
As a reminder to our pre-k parents, Monday, March 4 is pre-k screening day for next year’s pre-k students. This year’s pre-k students will not come to school on Monday due to screening.
It is definitely a busy time, and we’ve got an enjoyable week ahead. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family, and we look forward to another great week! Have a good evening!
PTO Online Store Open with New Stuff!
Our WES PTO has an online store where you can buy WES shirts, sweatshirts, and products. Recently, they've added toboggans and vintage WES gear.
This store will run continuously through the rest of the school year. Orders will be pulled each month on the second Monday of the month. Depending on when the order is placed it may take up to 4 - 5 weeks to receive your order. Once orders are pulled they will be processed within 10 - 12 business days. PTO members will deliver products directly to your child's classroom.
You can find the online store at the link below.

YMCA After School Care Available
You can also sign up for the YMCA after school care using this link for the Wilkesboro Elementary site. Once you are signed up, please communicate with your teacher to let them know your plans.
Also, this year the YMCA classroom will be in building 2. Please park in our back parking lot beside the MEGA Toy playground when coming to pick up your children. Thank you!

We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.
Car Line Helpers Needed!
We are looking for friend, positive people to help on morning carline. If you're interested, please complete this form and we will be in touch. Thanks for considering this volunteer opportunity!

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
