Onerahi School Friday 05 April
Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message
Kia Ora e te Whānau
Next week we say farewell to another exciting term filled with laughter, learning, and memory making. Everyone can be proud of the contribution you make to our Onerahi School community. This week we have had whānau hui. A chance to work together to recognise the strengths of the tamariki and share a vision for their pathway forward. The feedback has been excellent and shows us this was a valuable opportunity to support our tamariki. If you haven't managed to connect with your child's teacher please get in touch with them and make a time. This partnership is crucial to a successful time at school and indeed can be arranged any time.
As we celebrate the achievements and progress made by our students, both big and small, let us also take a moment to acknowledge the invaluable support and encouragement provided by all of our staff and also you, our parent community.
Throughout this term, our students have thrived in many ways and lots of their experiences and achievements have been shared each week through Danny's regular post on Fridays (which can be viewed on Facebook, Class Dojo and the Skool Loop app). We can all be justifiably proud of our tamariki.
I wish you all a safe, restful, and rejuvenating holiday break and we look forward to welcoming you all back for another exciting term of exploration, discovery, and endless possibilities.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to our school community. Stay safe.
Ngā mihi

Whānau Workshops/Awheawhe
Learning Support at Onerahi Primary School would love to offer whānau workshops during Terms 2, 3 and 4. These workshops are for you so I am very keen to find out what you would like to learn more about.
These are some ideas that have already been suggested:
Information about ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Ways to support toileting issues
Eating challenges
How to support your child at home with reading, writing, and math
Behaviour strategies
How to seek help for your child
Support in navigating the health system
I would love to hear other suggestions. My email is karen.j@onerahi.school.nz or just pop in and see me.

EPRO 8
Onerahi Primary represented very well in the recent EPRO 8 Championships. After some great results in the semi finals, we had two teams compete in the Grand Final at Whangarei Intermediate on Wednesday the 27th of March.
Tyler, Louie, Elise and Clare from one of our amazing teams share their words on the two events below.
"We went to the semi finals in teacher and parent cars and we won. We were excited and shocked but very proud. We had made a washing machine, which spun by a battery powered motor. If we had known how to use a sequence we would have zoomed through even quicker. It felt great when the judge asked how to say Onerahi because we knew that meant we had done well"
"We travelled to the Grand final in parent cars. There were 11 other teams in our age group there and we were very nervous. The challenges were very hard and we had to make a toilet. We learned a lot about how strong these need to be and it was a very good learning experience for all of us. Especially about not giving up when things did not work the first time. We had a lot of engineering difficulties which we had to problem solve. The electrical kit was particularly challenging but lots of fun. We really appreciated the support of the parents on the sideline - it was so nice"
Girls Smash Cricket
On Friday 15th March Onerahi Primary sent 3 teams of year 5 and 6 girls to the Girls Smash Cricket event at Cobham Oval Cricket Grounds.
Atahua - Yr 5 and Elizabeth - Yr 6 are keen to share their story of the day.
"We versed other schools in games of cricket of between 45 and 60 mins duration. We got better at batting and bowling and although it was hard it was lots of fun. We got to take turns at batting and covering different places while fielding. And we got to practice good teamwork. We got very hungry and enjoyed the sausage sizzle at the end. One person from each team was able to take home their very own cricket set. This was earned by hard work and cheering on their team mates"
Board of Trustees Vacancy
The board has received a resignation from a current board member resulting in a casual vacancy.
The board has decided to fill the vacancy by selection.
If 10% or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the board, within 28 days of this
notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be
held.
Request for a by-election should be sent to:
Presiding member (chair)
Onerahi School Board
2 a Church St, Onerahi, Whangarei 0110
or to: boardoftrustees@onerahi.school.nz
The last date for this request is 03 May 2024.
Term 1 Swimming
As the weather cools, we are starting to bid farewell to our school pool for a couple of terms. Our swim timetable officially finishes at the conclusion of Term 1. These sessions are a valuable addition to the curriculum, providing opportunities to learn how to be safe in the water and move through it confidently. The pool cover has done a great job of keeping the heat in but as the weather cools it is time to stay warm and dry. A huge thanks to our dedicated swim instructor Sarah, who is in the pool rain or shine, sharing her vast knowledge with our tamariki. We appreciate you Sarah!
Keeping our students safe when arriving and departing school
Senior leadership and the Board are currently working with the council to establish a safe travel plan. More information will come out in due course.

AUTUMN
The weather is starting to cool and no doubt we will see more and more of the sprinkly stuff from the sky. In terms 2 and 3 it's a great idea for students to bring a change of clothes each day, just in case they find their way into muddy puddles or get caught in a downpour. The KidsCan raincoats may be worn as part of their uniform and we recommend covered shoes and socks. As always, please make sure all personal items are named.
SCHOOL HOURS
8:15am School gates open to students and whanau
9:00am School begins
11:00-11:30am 1st Play Break

There are two eating breaks within the day, taken at times that suit each class. Please ask your child's teacher when their times are. We would like to remind all whānau that during school hours, your child is expected to be present and learning. Where possible, we ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours, so as not to impact on your child's learning. We also ask that every effort is made to arrive at school in time for learning at 9am.
IMPORTANT NOTICES/TINO PANUI NUI
Medication: If your child requires medication to be brought or kept at school, please be aware that due to health and safety concerns, this must be kept secure in the school sick bay. It is not to be kept in children’s schoolbags during the day. This is to protect the safety of not only the child requiring the medication but also all other students. All medication requires an accompanying permission/approval form signed by their parent or caregiver. This includes epi-pens for allergy management, inhalers for asthma or any other medication your child requires on a short-term or as needed basis.
