Finding Mentors and Building Connections Before Graduation
By Postsecondary Success Navigator Brad W. Minton
As you prepare to graduate high school and step into college, one of the most valuable things you can do is seek out mentors and build connections. So many of the supports that come to you proactively in high school will no longer be there and in postsecondary education or the workforce; the ownership will be on you to build a network of support for yourself. The transition to college, trade school, or the workforce can feel overwhelming at first, with fast-paced classes, new expectations, huge learning curves, less structure and countless opportunities. But you don’t have to figure it all out alone—there are people and resources ready to help. Academic advisors, professors, older students and colleagues can offer guidance and insight that make your transition smoother.
There are so many great ways to find mentors. As a college student, one of the best ways is to start early and attend those back to campus events, major and club fairs and other exposure opportunities to just learn what departments and organizations are present on your campus and how to get involved. This fast-tracks your connections to prospective mentors. As someone who will be in a trade school or a job training program one of the best ways to network is starting with your instructors. Generally, they have come from industry and understand the job market and where opportunities are to learn and grow in the profession. If you’re a student who’s looking to start working through direct employment or an apprenticeship, a fantastic tool in addition to your supervisors would be LinkedIn. Linkedin is a professional networking platform that can connect you to professionals in your geographic area and who work in your area of interest.
Remember, mentorship isn’t about finding people to just help you get a job. It’s really about building relationships with people who will constantly help challenge you to be the best version of yourself you can be and provide access to opportunities for growth. The secret is being proactive and seeking out the spaces where prospective mentors can be found and not trying to survive the tough transitions alone. These are the people who literally have a blueprint for success and can help support you if you simply ask!
Proactively making time for health & wellness assists our students in achieving their career & postsecondary goals. In every newsletter, we'll offer tips & resources to help keep you & your student's wellness a priority.
