Hawks Happenings
April 2024
Looking forward to the finish line! We have 45 days of school left!
I hope your Spring Break was wonderful with plenty of time for family, fun and fellowship! It is hard to believe that we had both 80 degree weather and snow over the break! The first week of April was designated as Assistant Principals Week! I want to share how thankful I am for Alison Price and all that she does to help our school. She is such a support for students, staff and parents alike! Our school is certainly a better place due to her efforts!
We have so much to do with so few days left in our school year. Thank you for making sure that your children are in class everyday that they are healthy AND that they arrive on time. Students who arrive late and/or checked out early miss out on important things so please try to limit tardies and early check-outs. If you MUST check your child out early, please do so before 2 PM. While this is our established procedure everyday, it is important to share a reminder now with our office construction since the check out process may take even longer.
Construction on the main office started over Spring Break. Please view the video below to see how to access our school via the temporary entrance at the K-1 door.
As you know, this Monday, April 8th is the Solar Eclipse. With so many eyes interested in what’s happening in the skies, we want to remind everyone to exercise caution. At school, we will be reminding our students to not look at the sun during the eclipse. More information about safety during the eclipse is available on the school system's website. Please note that you may send in special solar viewers for your child should you wish them to wear these during the eclipse. These special glasses will not be provided for all students by Buncombe County Schools.
Please pay close attention to the dates listed at the end of this newsletter. These dates could possibly change however we want to give you plenty of opportunity to make arrangements for our end of the year events.
I look forward to us all growing, learning and succeeding this month at NBES!
-Mrs. Allison
Attention families with children who will turn 5 on or before August 31st!
Kindergarten Registration/Enrollment is open! Register your child online!
Kindergarten Registration is on Thursday, April 11th!
Remember that our current Kindergartners do NOT come to school on Thursday!
Looking ahead to the End of the Year!
Due to the office construction our traditional end of the year events will change slightly. Our grade level Awards Days will be held in the gym this year. We will be unable to host the last day Talent Show as normal. We are exploring having a Virtual Talent Show that classes can watch in their classrooms on the last day of school. Stay tuned for more information about both of these events!
At the end of the school year, we are required to complete end of the year assessments for all students. It is very important that students are in attendance on testing days so they can complete these assessments. Please note if your child is sick, then we understand that you need to keep your child at home. Please see the image below for a reminder of all assessment dates.
We will encourage perfect attendance during End of Grade testing for 3rd and 4th graders. All students with perfect attendance and no tardies on EOG testing days will be entered into a drawing for prizes!
Growth and Development Classes for 4th Grade Students
Parents and Guardians of 4th grade students need to review materials for our upcoming Growth and Development Classes. Information will be shared via hard copy (may have been shared already) and via email. Please reach out should you have any questions.
Young Author's Day on April 19th!
This year we are hosting author, Jarrett Rutland!
J. Rutland (Jarrett Rutland) writes and illustrates picture books and graphic novels. He’s always felt pulled toward sequential storytelling. As early as kindergarten he was using free time to write illustrated books about vampires with his best friend. And in college, his thesis was a series of comic panels. These days vampires don’t fascinate him as much as goofy mash-ups. This is his third picture book. He’s currently working on a graphic novel about his grandfather and another one about robot samurai penguins. He lives with his wife, son, and black dog in Asheville, North Carolina.
Here are some websites with more information:

We will also have a picnic lunch on this day and enjoy music performed by Ben Scales and Carey Fridley.

Visitor Procedures
ALL parents and visitors to campus must sign in at the office and obtain a visitor sticker (or a volunteer pass if applicable). Please note that you must sign in even if you are only visiting the cafeteria. Your cooperation in helping us to follow Central Office policy and ensuring the safety of all children is expected and appreciated.
If you have an appointment or scheduled time to be at school in the morning, and wish to walk in with your child, please still plan to follow the established procedure of coming to the office, signing the visitor registry, and obtaining a visitor tag.
Visitors will only be allowed to visit a classroom (during instructional time) if the visitor has scheduled the visit with the teacher beforehand or if the visitor is a scheduled volunteer.
Visitors during Lunch
Parents are invited to eat with their child in the cafeteria; however, as a courtesy to other students, we ask that you do not bring outside food such as fast food and/or sodas into the school cafeteria. Parents should arrive at school in time to get a visitor’s pass and report to the lunchroom hallway five minutes before the scheduled lunch time. Please always let the teacher know ahead of time if you plan to eat with your child.
The daily lunch menu will be read during morning announcements. Occasionally there will be a menu change due to late deliveries or snow days. You can find links to BCS menus here: https://www.buncombeschools.org/page/menus-and-pricing
Should you desire to bring in a special snack for your child’s birthday or another event, please coordinate this with your child’s teacher so as not to conflict with our lunchroom policies. In addition, any food brought into the school to be shared with students must be store bought with ingredients listed. Please allow school staff to distribute snacks due to their knowledge and understanding of students’ allergies and dietary needs. Our school also encourages healthy snacks and choices.
Fourth Graders & families are invited to NWR Orientation Night on April 29th!
Before this orientation night, a NWR counselor will visit NBES and students will go on a field trip to NWR.
