Parent Newsletter
April 2024
I want to give a BIG Shout out to the 2nd and 3rd Grade Students who had perfect attendance last week during testing week. Several students received a gift card to receive ice cream for their efforts during testing and some received a free game play compliments of two of our sponsors. Great job to all of our students and teachers!
April is the month of the Military Child, and we want to celebrate our students and their guardians and parents who serve. Here are some of the events that will take place this month.
Military Monday-Student and Parent recite the Pledge over the intercom.
We Serve Wednesday-Parents and Students invited to speak to students' class about what it means to serve (Please reach out to teacher to secure a date and time).
Wall of Honor-Students and Parents create posters with their parent/guardian with a picture, branch of the military, and cities/countries lived in as a military child. These can be turned into the front office or student's teacher. They will be displayed on the main hallway within the school. All submissions must be in by April 18, 2024.
Purple Up Day-Everyone wears purple to support Military kids on April 15, 2024.
I want to reiterate that dropping students in the parking lot in the morning is NOT allowed. This is a safety concern and to ensure the safety of students and faculty, we ask that everyone drop off in the carline.
3rd Grade Parents, information will be sent home this week about the Alabama Literacy Act and How it affects your students. If you have any questions, you can reach out to your child's teacher or administration. You may also see the flyers/handouts attached below as well as the short video about the Literacy Act.
As we continue to move into this month, please remember our School-Wide Goals for Success:
1- Decrease the number of students who are Chronically Absent
2- Close the Achievement Gap of all students at each grade level and subgroups
3- Increase Academic Growth for all students
Remember, some of the things that you can do to assist is ensure that our students are attending school daily, communicate with teachers about student progress, allow students who can read to you and ask questions about what the student has read, allow time for students to write (penmanship, paragraphs, etc.), and allow students to receive ample rest at night.
We have put many measures in place to achieve this goal such as monthly Parent Attendance Meetings at the school for those parents whose students have more than 5 absences; Teachers are increasing the rigor of instruction through grade level materials, high level questioning, guided practice, and strategies that will assist students beyond the classroom.
Please partner with us to achieve our goal.
Below you will also find information that will assist you as we move throughout this month.
Title I Parent Compacts:
Parent Compacts have been sent home. It is very important that these forms are signed and sent back to school. The students name and parent signature must be on these forms. The Parent Compact is an agreement that the school, students, and parents agree to provide the listed items on the form (high quality instruction, teacher/parent conferences, report cards and progress reports sent home, and other parent and student responsibilities). If you have questions, please feel free to contact Yassiry.Rivera@hsv-k12.org.
Student Academic Success: It is very important that we practice Literacy (Reading & Literature) and Numeracy (Math) with our students daily. As we continue to meet as a faculty and staff to develop interventions and enrichment for our students, we are focusing on phonics, vocabulary building, reading comprehension, and basic math skills such as addition, multiplication, division, and fractions. Please see a few exercises below that will assist your student in academic development. Teachers post weekly (monthly) newsletters on their Class Dojo pages. Please take advantage in working with your student at home with the skills asked. We want our students to be successful at all levels of their academic growth.
Absences: Attendance is the law and a must for all school age students. If your student is absent, please provide a doctors' note or parent note upon your student's arrival back to school or email excuse notes to Nicole.Pittsley@hsv-k12.org. Parents are only allowed 7 parent notes a year.
School Hours: 8:00 AM-2:30 PM. The doors of the school open at 7:30 AM. Please make sure your student and his/her teacher know the mode of transportation of how the student is getting home before 12:30 PM. If there is no change in the way your student goes home (student and teacher knows from Day 1), you do not need to let the teacher know. Please reach out with any changes via ClassDojo or call to front office.
Late Students: Parents, please walk your students into school after 8:00 AM to check them in through the front office. We have too many students who come in without parent supervision, please walk in and check students in.
Safety: Parents please do not allow your students to cross the parking lot with no supervision. If there are not crossing guards or another adult in the area, please walk your student over.
No check outs after 2:00 PM
Thank you for all that you do for your student(s) and Williams Elementary School!
Go HAWKS!!

What does it mean to be an IB School?
International-mindedness is a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility towards its members. It is an awareness of the interrelatedness of all nations and peoples, and is a recognition of the complexity of these. Internationally minded people appreciate and value the diversity of peoples, cultures, and societies in the world.
