FES: Monthly Newsletter
April 2024
🤍 Principal Message 💚
Dear Freeland Elementary Families,
We are on the home stretch of the 2023-2024 school year, and now all we need is the spring weather to match! The next two months will fly by, and my hope is that our communication from our classrooms and our office continue to support you and your family to stay as organized as possible.

🌞 😎 Solar Eclipse: CLICK HERE for a family letter discussing the upcoming solar eclipse.
🚗 🚌Parking Lot Safety: As the weather starts to get nicer, we will have more students walking and riding bikes to and from school. Please make sure you our cautious in the parking lots, stopping at cross walks, moving with the flow of traffic, showing patience, and following our safety procedures. Please reach out if you notice anything, and we can always work with the Tittabawasee Township Police to receive additional support.
🧩💙Autism Acceptance Month: We are celebrating Autism Acceptance Month this April, and our PALSS team has planned various fun activities throughout the month of April for our students and staff. Please make sure to take a look throughout the newsletter for more information, including a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings, upcoming spirit days, and even our student's own garage sale for Walleye Festival!
💻📓🎓Spring Testing Information: During this month and next month our staff has coordinated testing schedules that will support and offer our students the best opportunity to show success and proficiency on state and district assessments. We plan to go into this testing season with optimism and excitement, and encourage our families to do the same. We want our students to come to school on those testing days relaxed and ready, and most importantly confident in their abilities. Because we believe in each one of them to show what they know! The testing schedule will be communicated to you by your child's teacher or teachers. We aim to have 100% of our students to take state assessments, so please work with your child's teacher on communication about any planned absences. It is best if your child is present at school on testing days to have their regular routine and be able to test in their regular environment with their classroom teacher(s). It is important that students get good rest, a breakfast that fills their bellies, and positive praise as they walk out the door! We are confident that our students will do great!
Thank you for your continued support. Go Falcons!
Sincerely,
Your Proud Principal, Mrs. McKenna

Class Placement Information 📝
Student placement is a thoughtful process that involves time and input from parents/guardians, classroom teachers and other school staff and administrators. The placement team (which includes the current teacher and potential future teachers, principal, special education department, school counselor and social worker) reviews academic progress, interpersonal relationships, gender, medical needs, and specialized instruction. We work hard to keep classrooms balanced and place students appropriately, knowing their academic and social strengths and other unique characteristics. Please know that specific parent requests are considered, however not guaranteed, as we always make placement decisions to ensure all classrooms are balanced.
Our goal at Freeland Community School District is to provide a safe and successful learning experience for all students. The following list includes, but is not limited to some of the criteria we consider when placing students into classrooms:
Program needs of students (e.g., special education services, 504 services)
Classroom configuration
Social needs of students
Compatibility of individual students and groups of students
Behavioral factors
Motivation level of students
Balance of achievement levels in groups of students
Information/Input provided by parents/guardians and teachers
Balance of class sizes throughout the grade level
We believe that every teacher at Freeland Learning Center and Freeland Elementary School works hard to know and understand the children in their classrooms. We work closely with families to support any need or issues that may arise, always placing the best interests of all of our students first. Requests for a specific teacher are considered, however, are not guaranteed. Final decisions for student and class placement rest with the school staff.
Class Placement Timeline:
May/June: Placement team works at school to place students into classrooms.
July/August: Placement is finalized with school based teams.
Middle of August: Placement is shared with students/families via Skyward.
