Greetings!
What do you think of when you hear March Madness? Basketball? What if we changed it to March Mathness. (Thank you Mrs. Reed for the idea!) This month I would encourage families to focus on Math.
Here is a list of activities to do as a family to practice Math:
Math Board Games: Play classic board games like Monopoly, Scrabble, or Yahtzee, which involve counting, addition, subtraction, and strategic thinking.
Cooking and Baking: Involve children in measuring ingredients, adjusting recipes, and understanding fractions. For example, ask them to double or halve a recipe.
Math Story Time: Read math-themed books together, such as "The Doorbell Rang" by Pat Hutchins or "Math Curse" by Jon Scieszka. Discuss math concepts introduced in the stories.
Puzzle Time: Solve jigsaw puzzles or logic puzzles together. Encourage children to describe their problem-solving strategies aloud
Measurement Fun: Use everyday objects to practice measuring length, weight, and volume. For example, have children measure the length of their bed using a ruler or estimate the weight of a bag of flour.
Money Management: Teach children about money by giving them a set budget for a pretend shopping trip. Have them calculate the cost of items and determine how much change they should receive.
Shape Hunt: Look for shapes around the house or neighborhood. Create a checklist of shapes like squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles for children to find and mark off.
Math Challenges: Pose math challenges or riddles to each other and see who can solve them first. Encourage children to come up with their own challenges to share with the family.
The more children see their parents involved in learning, the more likely they will want to continue learning Math. Miss Fleming had a great activity in 5th grade math where four students were challenged to divide three donuts. It doesn't always have to be pizza that gets divided. The key to the activity is to make sure they are working it out on paper as well. The visual learning helps with the problem-solving.

Just a reminder that we will be entering into colder temps. Please make sure students have the appropriate outerwear - coat, hat and gloves. We will be going outside if the temperature is above 15*. This is stated in the North Platte Public School Student Handbook.
If there is snow on the ground, students must have proper winter boots to leave the blacktop while there is snow on the ground.

North Platte Public Schools believes in the importance of children being in school. Cody Elementary will be monitoring building, grade, classroom, and individual student's attendance. We are gifted with prizes for students who maintain less than Five or More Absences. We also recognize students with Perfect Attendance. This year we are monitoring our Monthly Absences by Grade, please make sure your students are coming to school.
Students who have a temperature above 100* will be sent home and will not be able to return until they have been fever free for 24 hours.
Core Knowledge Language Arts® (CKLA) is a comprehensive program (Preschool–Grade 5) for teaching reading, writing, listening, and speaking while also building students’ vocabulary and knowledge across essential domains in literature, world and American history, and the sciences. The Core Knowledge Foundation has partnered with Amplify Education for nationwide distribution of professionally printed and packaged CKLA classroom materials.

Click on “Start" by "Next Year Existing Student Registration”
You will see your students listed, then click “Begin Registration.” Follow the instructions to verify and update your family and student information. If you have any questions you can contact the Welcome Center by emailing welcomecenter@nppsd.org.
Note for new families to NPPS that have already registered their student(s) for this fall, do not need to do the annual OLR update at this time.
Note for split household families: The first guardian to sign-in to complete the OLR Update process will take precedence. The remaining household guardian will be unable to update information through the portal.
