SUNDAY MESSAGE
April 8, 2024 - April 12, 2024
Message from Mrs. Reams
Randolph Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break. We are in the home stretch of the 23-24 school year! We have missed our roadrunners and cannot wait to see everyone tomorrow!
Week at-A-GLANCE - We will have a lockdown drill this week.
Monday 4/8
SOLAR ECLIPSE
- Calling all volunteers! Please join us on May 1st as we say THANK YOU for all that our volunteers have helped us accomplish this year. We are so thankful for our community including but not limited to our Watch Dogs, House Day monitors, book fair helpers and classroom volunteers. There will be an assortment of breakfast foods, juice, and coffee. Please RSVP by 4/22/24 so that we have a head count!
All students who have permission to view will come out to the track area by 2:10pm. Permission slips were due digitally or paper copy to the school by March 28th. Transportation should not be impacted. We plan to dismiss on time at 2:30pm. One teacher from each grade level will stay indoors with students who are not permitted to view. All students will be wearing glasses out to dismissal, as the eclipse will still be occurring during that time.
Online Registration is open for Kindergarten 24-25! In person screenings will take place on April 18th at the school your Kindergarten child is zoned to attend next year!

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION/SAVE THE DATE
- On 3/29/24, 5th graders were given paper copies of their rising 6th grade GMS course verification sheets to take home. Please review the courses your student has been recommended for, as well as their elective preferences. Please follow the instructions as given in the accompanying letter. If you need to turn in an override form, please return the completed form to your elementary school counselor so they can assist in getting them to the middle school. Thank you!
- The time has come for parent input for class placements next year. If you would like to, please send me an email at mreams@glnd.k12.va.us indicating any pertinent information you feel I need to know as we create classes for the 24-25. Please refrain from asking for a specific teacher. With the opening of the new GES, we are losing a number of staff and will have less sections of each grade level. With that, many staff will be teaching different grade levels next year. Examples of things to share: How your child learns best, what style they respond to well (very structured vs. not), students you would prefer they not be in the same class with etc. Please have this communication to me no later than Friday, April 19th.
- Sense of Belonging Survey - Linked here, please find a preview copy of the 5th grade GCPS Sense of Belonging and Inclusion Survey that will be administered during the latter half of April. The purpose of the survey is to collect student input on how our school is doing in creating a safe, welcoming, inclusive environment for all students and to solicit input on how we can improve. Any parent wishing to opt their child out of taking this survey may do so by emailing Melissa Reams at mreams@glnd.k12.va.us - thank you!
- Family Life Education is scheduled for all 4th and 5th grade students on Monday, April 15th. If you would like to OPT-OUT your child, please be sure to send the form back to school that was sent home last week in backpacks. If you have questions, please reach out!
SAVE THE DATE! Let's "Go Nutz for Reading" with the Richmond Flying Squirrels! During the months of February and March, RES students will have the opportunity to complete a special bookmark and earn a FREE ticket to the Flying Squirrels baseball game on Wednesday, May 29th! All they have to do is READ! **Use this link to purchase tickets for other family members early - and help raise funds for our school! *Detailed information will be coming home with your child next week.
- SAVE THE DATE! Our school-wide "Night at the Museum" event will be on April 23rd from 4-6 PM. Join us on a scavenger hunt as we explore student-created exhibits from all classrooms. We also welcome you to stay for dinner and visit the Book Fair in our Museum Gift Shop!
- ALL THINGS ATTENDANCE - please be sure you are reaching out to roadrunners@glnd.k12.va.us or calling the school to communicate when your child is absent. When we do not hear from you within 24 hours, it is marked un-excused. Thank you so much!
Let's make is an AWESOME week,
Melissa Reams

County-Wide News
We're excited to share details about the upcoming Goochand County Sheriff's Office Hidden in Plain Sight program, scheduled for April 9, 2024. This engaging and informative event offers families invaluable insights into recognizing the signs of teen drug use and risky behaviors. Our interactive sessions will cover a range of pertinent topics, including vapes/tobacco, marijuana, emerging drug trends, and over-the-counter medication. To secure your spot, click here or email Sgt. Leabough at rleabough@goochlandva.us.

On Saturday, April 27 from 8:30 AM to noon, Maggie L. Walker Governor's School in Richmond will be hosting a carnival of learning (see attached flier for more event details). This will be an opportunity for area 5th-grade students to see the campus, learn about the opportunities offered there, and participate in fun activities with other students in the greater metro area. Unfortunately, due to building capacity at MLWGS, Goochland is limited to inviting only 11 5th graders to participate in this event.
Parents of 5th graders and/or 5th grade students who are interested in participating in Dare to Be a Dragon Day are invited to enter a lottery to win one of the 11 invitations that will be extended to Goochland students. Submission of this lottery entry form by March 31, 2024, enters the student for a chance to attend the event. Only one submission will be accepted per 5th grade student. Winners will be selected from across our division. A minimum of three random winners from each of our elementary schools will be chosen. Once those nine students are selected, the remaining interested students' names will go into a second random drawing to fill the last two slots. Winners' parents will be notified via email shortly after Spring Break. Good luck!
GCPS Wellness Night
GCPS is hosting a Wellness Fun Run for our Goochland Community on Wednesday, May 8th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the GHS stadium. The purpose of the event is to promote health and wellness among students, families, and staff. We'll have food trucks, games, bouncy houses, and door prizes. We'll also have various community organizations there to help connect families with resources. Participants will also be able to participate in a "fun run" where they are showered with colored powder. Come out and join the GCPS mental health team, participate in games and enjoy a free night of family fun! This event will be fun for all ages. Please contact Ashley Lawson (alawson@glnd.k12.va.us) or Kristin Dunnigan (kdunnigan@glnd.k12.va.us) with any questions.
The Village at LeafSpring School at Three Chopt is a high-quality after-school program located in the Short Pump area! We are looking to potentially offer after school care to students attending Randolph Elementary School and the new Goochland Elementary School beginning in the 2024-2025 school year. We are hosting an after-school block party on Thursday, April 18th from 4:30-6pm! There will be games, snacks, and information regarding our program and what we offer! We are hoping to garner enough interest to make this possibility a reality and increase the after-school options available to the Goochland community! If you have any questions about this event or our program, please contact Teshell Bledsoe at tbledsoe@leafspringtc.com or give us a call at 804-935-6939.
