PES Field Day!
Dear Providence Families,
We want to remind you of our upcoming annual Field Day on Thursday, April 25, and Friday, April 26, 2024. Due to our increased enrollment, we are splitting up grade levels into two days. K-2 will enjoy activities on Thursday, and 3-5 will enjoy activities on Friday. This year, field day will be exclusively for our students. While we understand family involvement is appreciated, we want to give our students, faculty, and staff the time to enjoy all activities in a small timeframe. We have had several organizations come forward to volunteer to make our event a success. Your support in this manner is greatly appreciated as we strive to create a memorable experience for our students.
Thank you for understanding,
PES

Message from the Reading Coach
Hello, parents! If your child has a Student Reading Improvement Plan (SRIP), you should have received an update by November 3rd on the progress your student is making towards their reading goal. Teachers are diligently working with your student to achieve the goals set for them. If you have any questions about the SRIP goals, progress your student has made, or ways you can help at home, please reach out to your child's teacher.
A Message From Our Math Coach
Parents can assist daily with math by participating in some simple daily activities with their children. Working on math at home can help make students make real life connections from school to home.
There are many activities that can enrich and relate mathematics to daily life!
Some suggestions include:
-Talk about how many bowls to put out for dinner
-Fold napkins in different shapes
-Have your child count similar items as you put away groceries
-Have your child help measure ingredients for recipes
-Give your child change to count out to pay for small purchases at the store; have older children calculate the change
-Ask your child to compare prices of items by asking things like, “Which can of beans costs more?”
-Allow your child to weigh the fresh produce; have older children calculate the price by multiplying the price per pound by the number of pounds
-Read the days and dates on a calendar, talk about the number of days in the month, the number of days remaining until a special event, etc.
-Draw a scale map of your home and determine the best escape route in case of an emergency
-When traveling, write numbers on a grid and have your child color in the box as they see the numbers on signs or license plates
I am Mrs. Jessica Zavala and will be serving as the Providence Elementary School's Math Instructional Coach for the 2023-2024 school year.

Counselors Corner
Please welcome our new counselor, Ms. Julie Harris. She is excited to be part of our Providence Family. Ms. Harris decided to enter the teaching field due to my passion for educating and facilitating the growth and development of future generations. She previously taught 3rd through 5th-grade students for 21 years. She went into the counseling field because of the trauma I witnessed in students. She wants to show students that there is hope while encouraging them to be their very best.
She was raised in Connecticut and moved to Alabama to attend Alabama State University. She attended Southern Connecticut State University for a year, finally graduating from Alabama State University. She has three adult sons and one daughter, and loves spending time together as a family whenever schedules permits. One of my favorite hobbies is bike riding and jogging just before sunset.
