McGovern News!
March 22, 2024

Purim is a joyous holiday that celebrates Jewish survival and continuity throughout history. We celebrate with costume parades, skits and songs, noisemakers, and gifts of food. Traditions include dressing up, sharing gift baskets with friends, making noise by shaking groggers, and performing acts of charity. Purim begins at sundown on Saturday, March 23, 2024 and ends in the evening on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
As noted in the last edition, the month ends with Easter on March 31, 2024. Easter, celebrated by Christians around the world, is a joyous occasion symbolizing hope, renewal, and new beginnings. Beyond its religious significance, Easter is a time for families to come together, indulge in delicious treats like chocolate eggs and candy, and engage in fun-filled activities such as egg hunts and decorating eggs. It's a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about the values of love, kindness, and gratitude while creating cherished memories. Please remember there is no school on Friday, March 29th in observance of Good Friday.
As a reminder, report cards went home via backpacks yesterday. Reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions. Wishing you a terrific end to March with more springlike days ahead! Have a great weekend,
Best,
Amy McDonald, Principal
Ramadan: home school meals
On March 14, 2024, the USDA approved a waiver that allowed students celebrating Ramadan to bring home school meals, which include breakfast and lunch. This waiver allows us to offer meals students can take home and eat when their fasting time is complete. This waiver is part of the school meal program that is free for students in Massachusetts. To access the meals, students need to come through the serving line in the traditional manner with their meals so we can ensure they are receiving a "reimbursable" meal. We will then store it for them safely, pack it to take home at the end of the day, and print instructions for proper reheating. If your student is interested in bringing home meals as part of this waiver, please reach out to Shawn Fallon, Food Service Director, sfallon@medwayschools.org
While we know Ramadan has already begun, we thought this information may be helpful for families who have children observing and fasting.

March 2024
Dear Parents and/or Guardians:
During the month of April, we begin the process of constructing classes for next year. It is a very complex and time-consuming task, but it is, perhaps, one of the most important things we do to ensure a quality learning program for every child. Class lists are planned carefully, sensitively, thoughtfully, and with great deliberation. When placing students into classes, we base our decisions on the following goals:
To balance classes with respect to the physical, academic, social, and emotional needs of the respective members.
To ensure appropriate instructional groupings within each class.
To provide a gender balance in each classroom, whenever possible.
To consider the effects that individuals have on one another in order to provide an optimal learning environment for the entire group.
To maintain an equitable teacher-pupil ratio.
While we believe that we are in a position to know your child’s learning needs, we recognize that parents have insights that may help us in the placement process. If you have information about your child’s learning style or needs that you would like taken into consideration, please share it, using one of the below Google forms, by Thursday, March 28, 2024. Letters received after this date will not be taken into consideration. Please understand that this is not an invitation to choose your child’s teacher or classmates. We ask that you refrain from requesting a specific teacher or writing personal descriptions of staff members. Letters naming specific teachers or stating personal descriptions of staff members will not be considered.
McGovern Forms:
Placement Parent Information- Entering K (current preschool students)
Placement Parent Information- Entering 1st (current kindergarten students)
Placement Parent Information- Entering 2nd (current 1st Grade students)
Instead of naming or describing a teacher, tell us about the type of learning environment in which you feel your child will be most successful. If you have had a prior personal experience with a teacher through an older child, and prefer not to have a younger child be assigned the same teacher, you may include this information in your letter.
The decision for the placement of each child rests with the building principal based upon the goals listed above and on what is fair and equitable for all children.
Sincere thanks,
Amy McDonald, McGovern Principal
Kindergarten Camp!
If you have a rising kindergarten student, check out our Kindergarten Camp Flyer. You can use the
online registration form and register your child for a week of fun-filled activities. This is a great way to help your child transition into kindergarten. Students must be registered for kindergarten in order to attend Kindergarten Camp.
Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you for supporting our Scholastic Book Fair. This is, in part, a fundraiser for the McGovern School and helps us offset field trip costs, purchase items for the school, and offset other student facing costs. We love that you get to build your at home library and appreciate you supporting our school. Special thanks to the volunteers who came to work the book fair and Mr. Holt and Mrs. Overstreet for organizing!
McGovern Beautification Day
The School Site Council has been working to organize a beautification day for the front walkway and the patio by the door leading to parent pick up. The event will take place on Friday, May 10th from 3:30-5:30 pm. We will be planting plants and organizing outdoor spaces to make them even more inviting. We are looking for volunteers to help. Please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. If you plan to bring a child, please know there is no supervision available and you will be responsible for your own child. We are limiting volunteers to 30 people. You can find the sign-up genius here.
Lost and Found
Dear Parents,
We will be donating the items in our lost and found if not picked up by the end of the week next week. Please come to the lobby to check for your child's missing items before they are gone!
Thank you for understanding,
The Main Office
Project 351 Clothing Drive
Did you know that 245,000 children in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts don’t have warm, comfortable clothing to wear to school each day? Across our state, thousands of children between the ages of zero and twelve depend on donations of basic clothing necessities each year. Cradles to Crayons is a non-profit organization that works with approximately 75,000 families across the commonwealth to meet these needs. But they can’t do it alone! Please consider helping out this noble organization and these deserving children by donating new or gently used clothing at one of our conveniently located drop boxes any time between
March 18 and March 28.
You can find donation boxes at the following locations:
Medway Middle School
Burke Memorial School
McGovern Elementary School
Boxes will be easy to recognize by their bright colors and “Project 351” and “Cradles to Crayons” labels.
Please remember that “quality equals dignity.” Cradles to Crayons and these deserving children request that you tailor your donations to :
- the age range of 0-12 years,
- only donate clothes that are still in new, or nearly new condition
- Clothing cannot be accepted if it has rips, stains, or any sort of messaging.
- Donations of socks, underwear, and/or pajamas are greatly needed but can only be accepted if they are new.
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity! Together, we can improve the lives of thousands of kids and families across Massachusetts.

Math Game Day for Room 16!
Thursday, March 14th was Math Game Day for the students in Mrs. Kelly's class! Parents came to play some math games that room 16 plays in class each week and acted as their math partners for the day. Students get to teach their parents how to play the classroom games. These games are great ways to practice math skills in a fun way!
Parking & Classroom Event's
Parking - Parent Pick-Up
We have recently noticed several cars parking in the bus loop parking lot, outside the main entrance, at dismissal time. Please remember, if you are picking your child up for parent pick-up that you pull into the line. In the event you are parking and walking to meet your child, please park off of school property or at the turn-around area by the field when you first pull into the school's entrance. We have staff and parents entering the school at the end of the day for extracurriculars, meetings, etc. who have no access to parking because of this issue. The front parking lot is also our bus access loop. To ensure safety of all, if must park in the front lot, please be extremely vigilant when crossing the parking lot to enter the building.
Scheduled Classroom Events
If you are at McGovern for a scheduled classroom event, to ensure a safe and efficient dismissal process, please be sure to exit the building promptly and no later than 2:45 pm. Please remain cautious when leaving as our front entrance leads to an active bus loop.
A Note From the Nurse
Clothes Cupboard
Dear Parents,
As your children grow and you find yourself cleaning out their closets, please keep the Clothes Cupboard in mind. Here in the nurses' office, I keep spare clothes for students in case of any accidents. Gently used pants and leggings are needed but all types of clothing are greatly appreciated!
Please also remember to return clothing your child has borrowed.
Best,
Penny McKay

MFE Seeks Volunteers
The Medway Foundation for Education has been providing grants to fund innovative programs, events and educational support to teachers and students in Medway since 2002!
Did you know the MFE funded or helped fund the kiln that is used to make the ceramic tiles that students design, the beautiful new Me on the Map mural at Burke-Memorial and the amazing new performance piano at the high school? And that MFE also funded the Lost Boys of Sudan event, Remembering Auschwitz Virtual Tour, and the inaugural year of the Financial Literacy Fair and STEM Saturday for Girls? MFE is a quiet but powerful resource for our schools, students and teachers. BUT, MFE needs help.
Most of the Board members have been involved for many years and our kids have graduated or are in high school. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS to help us hold events (Dodgeball, Trivia Bee and more) and raise funds so that we can keep funding future grants. You can either join our Board (which meets quarterly to plan events and review and vote on grant proposals) or just help with fundraising and events. Are you a social media guru? We could use that assistance as well. Anyone in the community is welcome but we’re especially seeking input and assistance from parents of those in K-8. Feel free to reach out to anyone on the Board for more information! https://www.mfeducation.org/

FY25 Budget & Strategic Planning Process
Fiscal Year 2025 Budget
During the February 29 School Committee meeting, Dr. Pires, Superintendent, and Mrs. Pat Leonhardt, Director of Business, Finance, and Operations, presented the FY25 Superintendent’s Recommended Budget. The presentation that was shared can be found on the district website.
To keep you informed and engaged in this important process, we are committed to sharing upcoming events and resources designed to foster a transparent and inclusive dialogue with our community. Below is a list of resources and events that have taken place and that will be taking place to provide you with opportunities to remain connected and participate in the discussions surrounding our budget development:
March 14, 2024: Public Hearing on FY25 Budget: On Thursday, March 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Medway Middle School Presentation Room, community members are invited to share public comments regarding the proposed FY25 budget with the School Committee. This is the final opportunity for community feedback prior to the School Committee vote on the FY25 budget. Feedback shared at the hearing will be acknowledged and noted, but there will not be a dialogue during the Budget Hearing.
March 21, 2024: School Committee to Vote on FY25 Budget: At the March 21 School Committee meeting, the committee will vote to approve and forward the FY25 Medway Public Schools Budget to the Town of Medway to be included as part of the FY25 Town of Medway budget.
May 13, 2024: Annual Town Meeting: Community members are encouraged to attend Medway’s Town Meeting on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., at Medway High School, 88 Summer Street, when residents will be asked to vote on the Town of Medway FY25 budget, which will be inclusive of the FY25 Medway Public School’s budget to be used for the 2024-2025 school year.
Strategic Planning Process
We are launching an exciting nine-month process to develop an updated Strategic Plan for the Medway School District. The updated plan will replace the current plan, 2019-2024 Excellence for All: A Medway Mindset, Strategic Plan, while also embedding elements of the recently developed MPS Equity Plan. An important approach to the development of this plan is that it will include engagement and feedback from faculty and staff, students, family, and community members.
We invite you to be a part of shaping our future by joining us in various capacities:
1. Steering Committee: Approximately 18 members, including school, district, and community representatives, will guide and inform the strategic planning process. This commitment involves around 10 meetings, with initial dates set for April 11, May 2, May 16, May 30, and June 13 (tentative). Additional meeting details for next year will follow in the Spring.
2. Advisory Team: Community and school leaders will serve as advocates and advisors to the Steering Committee, ensuring broad engagement. Advisory Team members will participate in a 1:1 interview with our Strategic Planning facilitator and join a Spring Focus Group (dates TBD).
3. Community Workshop: Community members are invited to participate in focus groups to share insights on our strengths and opportunities for improvement.
We aim to finalize our next Strategic Plan by December 1, 2024. If you are interested in staying informed, participating in workshops and surveys, or volunteering for the Advisory Team or Steering Committee, please sign up HERE by March 15, 2024. We'll confirm participation shortly after.
Your involvement is crucial as we chart the course for Medway's educational future. Together, let's shape a strategic plan that reflects our collective aspirations and values.
COVID-19 Guidance
As you may be aware the CDC has dropped the five-day isolation requirement for a positive COVID-19 test. At this time the following Massachusetts guidance is still in effect. If and when the guidance in Massachusetts changes we will update and communicate our new practices.
Approved Transportation Changes
As we have communicated, the Medway School Committee approved the implementation of a Pay to Ride transportation program, as well as some other important changes to the transportation program effective for the 2024-25 school year. While we had planned to share the transportation handbook and information on the registration process by the beginning of March, more time is required. Please anticipate all materials to be shared by the middle of March. Thank you for your patience.
A synopsis of the program approved by the School Committee:
Students in K through Grade 6 who live more than 2 miles from school will receive school transportation at no cost
Students in K through Grade 6 who live less than 2 miles from school, and all students in grades 7-12 who do not qualify for free transportation, can participate in transportation via the district’s Pay to Ride program. The program is structured as follows:
$250 annual fee for first child in a family; $150 annual fee for each additional child with an annual family cap of $550
Students may take a different bus in the morning than the afternoon but each bus (morning and afternoon) must be consistent all 5 days of the week.
- Example of approved scenario:
- Morning pickup on Bus A at home
- Afternoon dropoff on Bus B at daycare
- Example of approved scenario:
- Morning pickup on Bus A at home
- Bus to MEDI on M, T, W
- Either Bus A or Bus B on Th, F (must be the same on both days)
*Note: Transportation to and from MEDI is managed by MEDI and not considered a separate stop
In addition, families who meet the federal guidelines for free and reduced lunch will not be required to pay for transportation. Federal guidelines for the 24-25 school year will be available soon.
Please note that per Medway School Committee policy JFBB, School Choice students are not eligible for district transportation.
Important Resources for Families
Free English Classes for Adults
Last year, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced the launch of MassLinks, the first fully virtual educational option for Massachusetts adults statewide who are seeking their high school equivalency or English language instruction. MassLinks classes are free for all adults, and Mount Wachusett Community College, in partnership with DESE’s Office for Adult and Community Learning Services, will deliver the instruction.
Music in Our Schools
Happy March! This also marks the beginning of Music In Our Schools Month!
Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM) is an annual celebration that occurs in March, dedicated to highlighting the importance of music education in schools and communities. Initiated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), MIOSM aims to raise awareness of the benefits of music education and advocate for its inclusion in the curriculum. Throughout the month, schools across the United States organize concerts, performances, workshops, and other events to showcase the talents of students and educators in music. As part of this celebration, the Medway Music Department, in collaboration with Medway Friends of the Performing Arts (MFPA) and Medway Cable Access Newswatch, has conducted a series of daily features where a different student (from kindergarten to 12th grade) shares their unique music education experiences through a brief video interview. MFPA will be sharing these daily student features on their Facebook and Instagram pages.
Oakley kicked off our Music In Our Schools Month by being the next student featured on Sunday, March 3rd!
Medway Friends of the Performing Arts (MFPA) is an organization composed of parents and community members advocating for performing arts education through various initiatives.
They will be sharing the Music In Our Schools Month feature daily on their Facebook and Instagram throughout this month!!

Thank you for participating in our Music In Our Schools Month project! I look forward to witnessing all the wonderful musical endeavors Oakley will pursue in the future.
9th Annual Medway Family Concert
SAVE THE DATE! Tune Those Ukuleles!
The MFPA is thrilled to present our 9th annual Medway Family Concert on March 24th at the Medway High School Auditorium at 2 pm.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Medway Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Their generous funding has helped the MFPA create a tradition that can be enjoyed by everyone in the community.
This year we are featuring The Unlikely Strummers, a group of Ukulele players that will provide a fun afternoon. All concert goers with a Ukulele are encouraged to bring their own Ukulele and strum along! We will also have the Memorial School Ukuleles on hand for any students that would like to play with the band!
This FREE concert is an hour long and complimentary refreshments are provided at the end of the show.

Planning for Inclement Weather
It is the goal of the district to hold school whenever possible. Parents and students should plan accordingly and leave plenty of time on winter mornings to arrive at school safely. Please know that the final decision about a child attending school during a weather event always rests with individual families. There may be occasions when deteriorating weather will mean that schools close due to unsafe conditions.
The superintendent will review anticipated road and sidewalk conditions, access to schools, projected weather forecasts, and consult with the police and public works departments in order to make a determination between approximately 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. if conditions will be safe for students to come to school.
The following plans will be in effect for inclement weather:
No School Announcement
If the superintendent has determined the conditions are unsafe, school will be canceled. The district will utilize the emergency notification system that will contact your home/cell phone and email using the information you have provided to your child’s school. The “no-school” announcement will also be shared on social media channels and carried on local television channels 4, 5, and 7.
All classes, school activities, before and after school programs, the Medway Extended Day program (MEDI), daycare program, adult education evening classes, and any school facilities use activities will be canceled. Transportation of students to out-of-district schools will also be canceled.
One or Two-Hour Delayed Opening Announcement
If the superintendent has been notified that the public works department needs additional time to plow or sand the streets to ensure safety, then a determination for a one or two-hour delay may be made. As with no-school announcements, the delayed opening announcement will be made using the emergency notification system to home/cell phone and email and carried on local television channels.
Please keep in mind:
Bus routes will begin by a one or two-hour delay, including all special education transportation for out-of-district schools.
Do not send your child to school earlier than the delayed opening, as the school grounds may not be plowed and there will be no staff available to supervise early arrivals.
PreK ½ day sessions will take place if a one hour delay is called, and will be canceled for a two hour delay.
School lunch will be served at its regularly scheduled time.
Schools will be dismissed at their regular times.
Emergency Early Release Announcement
If a severe weather condition or other emergency develops during the school day, the district may release students before the typical end of the school day. Parents will be notified by home/cell phone and email and the announcement will be carried on local television channels, and displayed on the district website. As appropriate, the district will work with public safety officials to shelter students in the district if unable to send home.
Inclement Weather Bus Stops for Walkers
We understand that inclement weather days can present challenges when it comes to getting your child to school safely. Snow clearing responsibilities for our town begin with the main roads, followed by sidewalks around our schools. We recognize that this can be especially concerning for families whose children typically walk to and from school.
In the event that sidewalks are not passable and you are unable to find an alternative means of transportation for your child(ren) on these days, we are here to help. To assist us in providing a solution that ensures your child's safe travel to school, please complete the brief form linked here.
By completing this form, you'll enable us to notify you of the designated bus stop location where your child(ren) can board or exit the bus on such occasions. We have introduced this service to support safe transportation to school during inclement weather, and we appreciate your proactive participation.
It is important to note that these specialized bus stops will only be available to families who have signed up in advance. We will communicate additional information once the inclement weather bus stops have been established.
Additional Reminders for Parents
Be sure your child’s school has your updated contact information.
Have a family emergency plan in place so your child knows what to do if sent home for any of the reasons noted above.
If your child is regularly driven to school and you or they feel it is unsafe to drive during the inclement weather, please determine an alternative means of transportation to school.
Breakfast, Lunch and Snack
Snack
Families are asked to provide students with a daily snack to bring to school. If there are any barriers to a family providing a daily snack, please reach out to our main office and they will connect you with an administrator or counselor and we will ensure that all students have snacks daily.
Free Breakfast and Lunch
We are thrilled to offer all students breakfast and lunch free of charge. All students are offered breakfast as they come through the doors at McGovern School and students chose their lunch in the cafeteria. If you do not want your students to eat breakfast or lunch, please have a conversation with your student about your home expectations.
