Dear Archers,
Here at SMS we are continuing to be amazed at the intelligence and determination that our students demonstrate on a daily basis. This past week we had a number of 8th graders participate in the National Assessment for Educational Progress. We heard nothing but positive feedback from the test coordinators who repeatedly said they LOVE coming to Sherwood to work with our students. This is just one example of the positive ways that our students are recognized. Next week look for information about the ways we are encouraging positive behaviors here at SMS.

A Request

The Business
Incoming Freshman Night at SHS
Sherwood High School has two parking lots - one directly in front of the building and another upper lot above the main campus entrance. If you park in the upper lot, please walk down to the main front entrance located closest to Haide Road. We look forward to meeting everyone and helping to start on the road to high school success!
Outdoor School Informational Meeting
On March 7, from 6:00 - 7:00pm we will have a guest presenter from NW Outdoor School here to provide information about the Outdoor Science School experience for our 6th graders. The presenter will be speaking about the program, providing an overview of what students and families can expect, and answering any questions that you may have. Please join us in the SMS Commons for this informative night!
SMS will be attending Outdoor School at either Trickle Creek or Cedar Ridge during either May 14 - 17, or May 21 - 24. More information will be coming soon about which camp and week your student will be attending.
Digital Report Cards
Beginning in March 2024, the Sherwood School District will provide families with electronic report cards for all students, starting with the report cards for Trimester 2. As we move to this paperless option, report card delivery to all families will default to "paperless-only," and paper report cards will no longer be mailed home.
Additionally, we will be implementing a new platform called ParentSquare to facilitate digital report card delivery. Once grades are finalized, you will receive a secure link by email/text to access your child’s report cards using the ParentSquare website or mobile app. Report cards will also continue to be available through ParentVUE. Please watch for more details on this prior to the end of Trimester 2.
If you would prefer to receive a paper copy of your child’s report card, you can opt out of the electronic-only option in your ParentVUE account. For opt-out instructions, please visit our website at https://sherwood.k12.or.us/electronic-report-cards/ or contact your school office for assistance.
Sexual Health Curriculum Night
Parents are invited to attend an information session to learn more about the Sherwood Middle School Sexual Health Curriculum for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. This unit will be taught in Trimester 3 for all three grade levels.

Updates and Changes to Flex
We are excited to share an update regarding Flex Time. As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering academic success, we will be extending Flex Time opportunities for the remainder of the school year. Beginning in January, students will have the chance to attend Flex Time twice a month on Wednesdays. This expansion provides an even greater opportunity for our students to engage in personalized learning experiences and receive the support they need.
What happens during Flex Time?
Flex Time is a dedicated block of time in our schedule designed for students and teachers to meet for a specific need.
During Flex Time, students can:
- Get Additional Academic Support:
Whether they need clarification on a challenging topic or want to reinforce their understanding, Flex Time provides an environment for academic support. Teachers may utilize this time to assign students to a Flex to ensure that they are getting the additional time and targeted support in areas of need. - Attend Academic Extensions:
For those eager to explore subjects in greater depth, Flex TIme offers academic extensions, providing students with the chance to delve into advanced topics and expand their knowledge. - Participate in Clubs:
Flex Time provides a platform for students to engage in extracurricular activities through club participation. These clubs are diverse, catering to a range of interests and provide opportunities for students to connect and share passions. - Experience Enrichments:
Beyond the standard curriculum, Flex Time features enriching activities that encourage creativity, critical thinking, and exploration.
How Can Your Child Make the Most of Flex Time?
Student autonomy: encourage your child to take an active role in their education by choosing sessions that align with their needs and interests.
Discuss with your child how they can utilize these opportunities for academic growth and enrichment.
We believe that Flex Time serves as a valuable resource for our students, promoting not only academic success but also fostering a sense of responsibility and independence in their learning journey.
