Superintendent's Message
Violet Nichols
December 19, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
This is my last newsletter before the new year, and with that I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for our students, staff, and community. We have a truly special school community and I am thankful for all that you do to support our students, our staff, one another, and our schools. Thank you!
This time of year offers an opportunity for reflection and rest. I want to encourage everyone to take this well-deserved break to relax, recharge, and spend quality time together.
A reminder that schools will be closed starting Monday, December 23rd and we’ll return on Thursday, January 2nd. I look forward to seeing what 2025 will bring!
Here is some information for Food Resources for anyone interested:
And a message from Rhonda Ketner, Nutritional Services Director,
The SBSD Nutritional Services department operates the Offer vs. Serve meal pattern of the USDA’s National School Breakfast and Lunch programs. The state of Vermont offers Universal School Meals free of charge to any student (pre-K through 12th grade) that takes the required components to meet the USDA guidelines for a Free reimbursable meal.
The USDA only reimburses a complete reimbursable meal based on their meal pattern guidelines. Individual items such as a piece of fruit for a snack, or just milk or juice for breakfast do not meet the reimbursable meal guidelines and those items must be paid for.
Offer versus Serve (OVS) allows students to decline foods they do not want to eat. All five components must be offered in the minimum required quantities but, under OVS, students have the option to select a minimum of three components from the five offered at lunch or three food items from the four offered at breakfast. To make a FREE reimbursable meal, at least one of the component/items the student takes must be at least a ½ cup of fruits or vegetables.

Household Income Form
The district is requesting your assistance in supporting both our schools and local property taxes by completing the Household Income Form (HIF). This information determines funding that our schools get and as well as impacting property tax rates. The form takes less than five minutes to complete. Both FAQs and the form in various languages are available at the the link above.

Transportation Update from Operations Director, Jean-Marie Clark
As a reminder about the late activity bus, beginning on January 2, 2025, we will run only one late activity bus. It will depart the school grounds at 6 pm daily, and make stops in Georgia and the Islands. There are no changes to the stops; it will just be one run. Compressing to one run will potentially change the times of the drop-offs. One challenge with the late activity runs is that the students on the bus change every day. So not knowing who will be on the bus, makes it difficult to predict what the drop-off times will be.
We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we make this change. Not only will it be impactful to our resources, but it will also help ease the burden on our hard-working drivers!
Visit our Transportation Update page for up to date information.
For questions and concerns about transportation, please contact Stephanie Hyatt, Transportation Dispatcher. Stephanie is the point of contact for families with questions about transportation in-the-moment. She can be reached at 802-233-0673. You can also call the bus garage at 802-652-7479.
