Superintendent Update
Dear Nashoba Families,
At Wednesday's School Committee meeting, the school district notified the School Committee that we will post a request for proposal (RFP) for the management of our food services department. Notification to the School Committee was the first step in the process.
The most crucial aspect of this change is to ensure that our valuable food services employees remain employed under the umbrella of the Nashoba Regional School District and not the management company, a stipulation that will be included in the design of the RFP. In addition, we will require companies who bid to demonstrate the ability to provide highly nutritional food that tastes great. This move will ensure we are providing our students with excellent meals that meet all of the federal requirements for public schools. It is important to note that this decision is not related to the operational budget. The food services department is 100% supported by federal funds and revenue generated by purchasing.
The RFP process is the methodology we will use to ensure we select a management company that delivers high quality nutritious food to our students and staff. Information will be provided to the School Committee and the community at large as we progress. We have asked our kitchen managers to participate in the vetting process of the applicants to ensure further that our program will only be stronger as a result of this change.
Below is the summary that was provided to the school committee on Wednesday.
I hope you all have a great weekend.
Peace,
Kirk Downing

Nashoba's High School Curriculum Review Family Feedback Invitation via ThoughtExchange
In December, we provided an update on the progress of our 9-12 Science Curriculum Review. This update can be found here. We are now gathering feedback from students and families to share their thoughts and perspectives as part of the next phase of the process. Students will be surveyed during their science classes next week, and families will be surveyed using ThoughtExchange beginning today. ThoughtExchange was used earlier this fall with strong participation from our PreK-5 families to help inform our curriculum review process for literacy. ThoughtExchange allows families to share their perspectives through a short survey and open-ended exchange format so that we can better understand our families' perspectives and priorities as they relate to curriculum and instruction.
9-12 families are asked to be on the lookout for a direct email this afternoon with the link to ThoughtExchange to share thoughts and perspectives. We will use the central themes gleaned from the Exchange to help inform our next steps. We will also share these themes with families once the Exchange is closed. The ThoughtExchange will be open from March 1st - March 15th.
Panorama Student Surveys, Year 2 Implementation, Gr. 3-12
As you know, this past October, we administered surveys to students in grades 3-12 to glean information about their self-perceived social-emotional needs and feelings of belonging within our school communities. The effort to hear from our students about their self-perceived needs has helped inform school improvement goals within each of our district schools. Teaching teams and departments have been strategic in their support to address the needs identified within their respective grade level and content areas. This month, we will reassess our students in grades 3-12 with a spring survey to check in to hear from our students and gauge the efficacy of the supports in place since the fall.
Our district's Strategic Plan emphasizes the importance of this work. Specifically, Strategic Objective #3, titled "Culture and Belonging," guides our approach and details action steps for integrating social-emotional practices into regular classroom activities and overall student life. This feedback is essential to identify successful practices and areas that need improvement.
The upcoming spring survey should take students 10 - 15 minutes to complete. As they did in the fall, students will complete the survey anonymously. Also of note, the surveys administered this spring have been streamlined in scope to focus on identified priority areas by school. This streamlining reduces potential survey fatigue and focuses on areas each school has been working on. Following our March survey administration, school principals will summarize their respective school results and share the survey findings with their school communities and the next steps.
We hope to have all of our students participate in survey administration. While our goal is 100% participation, parents/caregivers may choose not to have their children participate. The survey is voluntary; your child can skip any question or decide not to participate. Should you wish to preview the survey in its entirety, please reach out to your building principal directly. The Gr. 3-8 survey will be available for previewing on Monday, and the high school survey will be available for previewing on March 21st. If you would prefer your child not to participate in this survey, please complete this Opt-Out Form by Wednesday, March 6th, 2024 (for grades 3-8) and March 26th (for grades 9-12).
