Boehm Goes Nation-Wide! Pennies for A Cause
By Hannah Hawkes
October 6th, 2017
The Penny Wars…. an epic battle between the grades….throwing pennies at each other...who would win….
Just kidding! Penny Wars was actually a fundraiser to help out a school in Texas after the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Mrs Bradshaw, a Boehm Guidance Counselor, had contacts with a school in Texas and decided that to help them recuperate, Boehm would hold a Penny War: all pennies collected were positive points and all silver coins were negative. This is how it works: a seventh grader puts pennies in the seventh grade jar and silver coins in the 6th and 8th grade jars. 7th grade would gain points, and the other grades would lose points, while all the coins were raising money for the same cause. This fundraiser started on Monday the 18th of September and ended on Friday, the 29th of September.
In the beginning it seemed obvious who would win--8th grade: the score was 8th with 375 points, 7th with 201, and 6th with 20. The next day however, the 8th grade learned that it wouldn’t be so simple: 6th now had 2072, 7th had--wow--9661, and 8th was bombarded with silver coins from the other grades: negative 10,504! This went on and on switching between each grade in first place, with mostly 6th in the lead, when eventually there was a final score, the total of points throughout the Penny Wars. In the end, 8th grade came out on top, with 11,500, then 6th with 3100, and finally 7th with negative 1017. Through it all, we raised $1,309.98! Good job, Boehm! The school in Texas will be happy to receive our donation, along with our well wishes.
Grade Level Updates
6th Grade
By Keira Jones
Both 6th grade teams have been very busy getting to know the school. They are doing great with their lockers, all of their new teachers, and their Chromebooks! Students have been playing review games using “Kahoot”, and they are loving it! It’s a great, fun way to understand new content. They’ve been doing an awesome job coming to school with their Chromebooks charged and ready for the day!
7th Grade
By Keira Jones
Both 7th grade teams will be focusing on the ROCKSTAR program. Being a “ROCKSTAR” means showing character and pride. Each marking period, students will be given a ROCKSTAR card with 30 stars on it. Their goal is to get a stamp on every star by the end of the marking period. You receive a stamp by showing ROCKSTAR qualities and character. At the end of the marking period, students who filled their cards will have the opportunity to win a T-Shirt and be named a 7th grade ROCKSTAR for that marking period. Each teacher only gets to pick 2 students each time, so show your character and pride!

Chorus
By Amanda Qu
October 11th, 2017
The seventh and eighth grade chorus are kicking off the year by preparing their songs for the Pyramid Concert (Wednesday October 17, 2017 at PSH East). They’ll be singing Take Me There by Pentatonix, and Climbin Up the Mountain, Children! By Rollo Dilworth. Chorus is a great activity for anyone who loves music. Chorus provides free vocal training and performance opportunities for aspiring musicians. Singing has also been proven to stimulate more parts of the brain than anything else, including the creative part of the brain, which creates unique neurological connections that can help someone in other subjects. Who knew chorus could benefit us in so many ways? Singing as a group is just like playing on a sports team. Choir stresses the discipline of practice as well as team work, to ensure the choir sounds balanced. Being in chorus can also help relieve stress from the school day. Since chorus rehearses during resource period, people get a chance to relax and sing their favorite songs with friends.
Come to our concerts!
Tuesday October 17, 2017 at PHS East starting at 7:30 P.M.
Wednesday December 6, 2017 at Boehm starting at 7 P.M.
Thursday May 3, 2018 at Boehm starting at 7 P.M.
Orchestra Program
By Ezra Greenberg
October 6th 2017
Orchestra has just started, and the fun has already begun! In 6th grade, new members of orchestra are being introduced to music at a more advanced level than what most of them have seen in elementary school. Currently, one of the pieces they are learning is “Classic Symphonia” by Del Bargo. The other orchestra is for 7th and 8th graders. Most of the musicians in this orchestra have played in the sixth grade orchestra in the past. The additional experience that the 7th and 8th graders have allows them to play more advanced music such as an arrangement of “Finlandia” by Sibelius. As Payton Ferri, a viola player in 8th grade describes the orchestra, ”Orchestra is one of the best programs that is run at school. It is very well organized... It gives us lots of amazing opportunities such as honors and solos.” When asked about the overall purpose of orchestra, the conductor, Mrs.Chippendale stated, “The purpose of orchestra is to help students grow as string players and musicians while learning to work collaboratively with others to perform music.”
Orchestra has academic and social benefits. Skills in music not only allow students to play the beautiful pieces heard at the orchestra’s concerts, but music education has been shown to produce students who have higher test scores, increased attention span and focus, better emotional resilience, and an improved memory. In addition to all of these benefits, musicians can make friends for life at orchestra. Hannah Greenberg, a Pennsbury graduate who is now in her Junior year at the University of Delaware, said that orchestra was very important to her social life. Greenberg said, “Through orchestra, I have been able to make lifelong friends. These friends have stayed with me from elementary school even all the way up to college.”
As the school year progresses, the school orchestras will continue preparing for the concerts: one in the winter and one in the spring. The 6th grade winter concert will be January 11th and the 7th and 8th grade winter concert will be on December 6th. On May 9th, there will be the end of the year instrumental concert.
Band and Jazz Band Programs
By Nick Centofante
October 6th, 2017
The 7th and 8th grade band is off to a great start with everyone excited and motivated to start the year strong. The students are learning songs like Our Kingsland Spring, and March from Symphony No. 2. Both songs give a challenge to those who play an instrument, but it all comes together in the end to form an exciting and energetic song that is fun to play. The 6th graders are faced with harder pieces than what they have faced before. All band members are ready for another great year in the band!

Volleyball

The anticipation of who’s going to get the ball next...The excitement when the team wins a game...Volleyball has it all! The CBMS volleyball team always strives for the win against other schools. Volleyball is a great team sport for anyone who is willing to put their best foot forward. In volleyball, communication and connection with each other is crucial to the success of the team, so people will establish great communication skills through this sport. This sport is loved by a lot of people because it's indoors, which means it doesn’t get canceled if the weather is bad, and there isn’t a set number of people who have to be on a team to play. For example, the number of players on a team can range from 2-7. In the end, the players all improve together, and they make fun memories along the way!
Come support Boehm’s volleyball team on October 23th and October 30th - where they’ll face Pennwood in an exciting showdown between middle schools!

By Ezra Greenberg
October 6th, 2017
Welcome to the first “Tech Tips” article! From now on, in every newsletter there will be a tip on how to utilize your Chromebook in the best possible way. This week's theme is Keyboard Shortcuts.
What is a keyboard shortcut? A keyboard shortcut is a way to make your Chromebook does different commands (such as shut down or make the font bold) by using the keyboard instead of the touchpad.
Here are some of the most useful ones:
Ctrl + f- opens up a bar where when you type words into it, it will find all occurrences of that word on the website you are on
Ctrl + r- refreshes your current page
Ctrl + t- opens a new tab
Ctrl + Shift + q (twice)- sign off
Ctrl + n- open a new window
Ctrl + b- turn on bold on Google Docs
Ctrl + u- turn on underline on Google Docs
Alt + search- turn on/off caps lock
Ctrl + c- Copy highlighted text
Ctrl + x- Cut highlighted text
Ctrl + v- paste copied/cut words
To find more, you can either go to this link https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/183101?hl=en
Or push Ctrl + alt + ? to see all of the keyboard shortcuts.
Have fun experimenting with these keyboard shortcuts!
