What a way to start April- or what I call the "home stretch"! I hope Spring Break was a great time for you to disconnect and enjoy time with your student. On this first day back, we get a glimpse of a solar eclipse, something that won't happen in totality for another 18 years! And...this week marks the last marking period of the 2023-2024 school year. We have so many things planned for the month of April and for the end of the school year, and here's just a few:

• We will celebrate our military students and their families throughout the month. Get your purple ready!
• Our SCA will learn about a special organization that is working to bringing awareness and education to children with Autism in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
• We have our last all-grade level dance on April 12th.
• Our music students are gearing up for their all-district performances and Spring concerts.
• Our spring athletic teams are in full swing.
• We have our annual talent show and poetry slam coming up at the end of the month.

With all of these great events this spring, it is easy to lose focus on the biggest event of the season: SOL testing. Our state assessments are just around the corner in May, so these next few weeks in the classroom will be some of the most important academic days of the year. Please do everything you can to have your child present and ready to learn each day. Teachers and staff will be reaching out to offer tutoring and other remediation services as needed to help get everyone ready for "the final push" to SOL testing.

Thank you again for your partnership. We would not be able to do all of the things we do without your support. Let's hop into this "home stretch" with renewed energy and focus.

April is designated nationwide as the Month of the Military Child! During this month we recognize the unique contributions made by military children who experience deployments, frequent moves, and transitions related to life with a military family. In an effort to recognize our Active Duty military students, we have planned a month of activities to salute them! Please refer to our MOTMC Spirit Week to support our military-connected students and if you are an Active Duty Military Family, be sure to check your email for a special invitation to join us at Jolliff for a Military Jamboree on April 25th!

At the School Board meeting on Monday, March 25, 2024, the Board approved a resolution related to our military students. The resolution designates April 2024, as the Month of the Military Child. Students are encouraged to dress in purple on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in celebration of “Purple Up for Military Kids.” The day shows support for military-connected youth.

On Saturday, April 27, 2024, all families with active duty and retired military members are invited to attend our annual Operation Military Families event. The event will be held from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Indian River High. See more information and RSVP here.

Registration for secondary summer school will begin April 29, 2024. Students will register for summer programs with the support and assistance of their grade-level counselor.

• Middle School courses will be held in person.

Session 2 - Monday, July 15 - Tuesday, July 30, 2024

Middle School Special Education and EL programs will be offered Monday, June 24 - Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

• Rising 9th graders will have the option to take a course for initial credit via the Online Initial Summer School Program with payment of tuition. Students pursuing initial credit for a specific Academy will not be required to pay tuition.

A solar eclipse will occur over Tidewater on April 8, 2024, beginning at 2:04 p.m. and will end at 4:32 p.m. The maximum eclipse will occur at 3:20 p.m., and the moon will cover over 80 percent of the sun. Chesapeake Planetarium Director, Dr. Robert Hitt, offers how to safely view the upcoming eclipse. Please remind your child that you should never look directly at the sun.

Chesapeake Public Schools is providing an opportunity to purchase online and mobile tickets for ALL middle and high school athletic events (which includes all sports for home and away games). Purchasing tickets online permits fans to easily access and share tickets (email or text) without standing in line.

All middle and high schools will have a dedicated GoFan page for ticket sales. The service, which enables attendees to pay and access tickets electronically. The middle school tickets will be available prior to the start of their season.
