UDHS Community Update
March 21, 2024

Cardinal Pride
Good afternoon, UDHS Family,
The 2024 Class of the Cardinal Key Chapter of the National Honor Society will be inducted tonight under the direction of Ms. Martonik, Mr. Dwyer, and Mr. Greenberg. In a dignified ceremony which will include guest speaker Mr. Giammarco, students will be sworn into this prestigious organization for their excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The list of inductees can be found here. We are proud of all of our scholars.
Congratulations to Angelina Graham for being selected to receive the Widener University High School Leadership Award (HSLA). This award program is designed to recognize high school students in the region who have demonstrated leadership, stood up for what is right, and made a significant difference in their communities. Angie certainly has demonstrated these qualities, reflecting Widener University’s long-standing commitment to inspiring and developing leaders to affect positive change. She attended the award ceremony at the Constitution Center along with Mrs. Lyons and Ms. Martonik.
Alexis Andrulonis has been awarded the pretigious AIAA Roger W. Kahn Scholarship. This honor belongs to only four students across the country who are pursuing a major in aerospace. We wish Alexis all the best as she studies engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Our school has adopted The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Students and staff will be training, practicing, and drilling the SRP. This week our students and staff performed a shelter drill. This is to prepare for an event in which there is a natural disater. In this instance, students move into the hallway away from the glass and assume their protective positions. We will continue to update our parents and guardians as these procedures are implemented.
The high school is excited about our annual "March Attendance Madness" competition. This is an attendance competition among the Period 1 Red and Period 1 Gray classes. Each week (bracket style) two classes will go head-to-head to see which class has the highest percentage of attendance. In single elimination, Period 1 classes will progress on an actual bracket until an overall winner is determined at the end of six weeks. The tournament will run from February 12 - March 22. The two winning Period 1 classes will receive a catered breakfast the week after spring break. Thank you to our school-wide PBIS committee for sponsoring this event.
Spring break begins next week. We will see all students back in the Nest on Tuesday, April 2. We wish you a wonderful week and, to those involved in religious holidays, we wish you all the best in your celebrations and observances.
Activities
On Friday evening at MiniTHON, hundreds of students, staff, and community members stood for four hours to make a difference in the lives of children and families fighting pediatric cancer and fund research to find a cure. During this, our tenth year, they raised over $77,000. Over the past decade, UDHS has donated over $459,000 towards this fight against cancer. Thank you to all students, staff, and community members for an incredible showing, and special thanks to Mrs. McNamara, Mrs. Sachson, and the student leadership team for giving us the opportunity to make a difference and show our character. Well done, Upper Dublin High School.
Our high school Jazz Band visited the State Capitol Building on Monday. At the invitation of Pennsylvania Melissa Cerrato, Mr. Kennedy and his group were acknowledged for community outreach and jazz advocacy. Please check out a video of the trip here.
Our annual Music in Our Schools Concerts were more wonderful events in which our talented musicians shared their gifts with us. Thanks to Mr. Arnold, Mr. Horn, Ms. Yang, and Ms. Vandergrift for their leadership in bringing these programs to the community.
Athletics
Thank you to Mr. Heiland for his update on UDHS athletics.
Last week the Upper Dublin Swim and Dive program tremendously represented our school and community at Bucknell University. For the boys, they had a total of 8 swims, (3 relays, and 5 individual). Of those 8, 3 made it through the prelims round and advanced to the night session. The 200 Free Relay (Spencer Motelson, Nick Medvedev, Will Matthews, & Brady Manser) finished in 13th. Toby Herzog had two individual final swims, winning the consolation heat of the 200 IM and also earning a 4th-place state medal in the 100 Breaststroke. His time of 55.46 also earned him All-American status. The boys finished 20th in the state which was an improvement of 26 spots.
For the girls, the team finished with a remarkable state runner-up finish with 203 points, 8 behind the champions from North Allegheny. The girls won 9 medals out of the 11 events they participated in. This included the 200 Medley Relay ( Vikki Williams, Sophia Sileo-Magliari, Olivia Auwarter, & Maddie Shapiro ) which opened up the meet by winning state gold, which also earned them All-American status. Arina Corobyeva followed that up by earning a state silver medal in the 200 Free. Auwarter earned a 5th-place state medal in the 200 IM, while Shapiro finished in 15th. Auwarter earned another state medal by finishing in 8th place in the 100 Fly. The 200 Free Relay (Vorobyeva, Shapiro, Sileo-Magliari, and Alicia Taylor) finished in 4th place to close out day 1.
Williams and Taylor got things started on day 2, by earning points in the 100 Free by finishing 9th and 15th respectively. Vorobyeva earned her 3rd of 4 medals by placing 6th in the 100 Free. Williams finished 4th in the 100 Back to earn her second medal. Sileo-Magliari set a new school record in the 100 Breaststroke and earned a state bronze medal. The 400 Free Relay (Williams, Auwarter, Taylor, and Vorobyeva) capped the meat with a state silver medal and All-American status.
