Parent Newsletter
March 2024
Thank you for all that participated in the PTA Father Daughter Dance and the Silent Auction. Both events were well attended and fun.
I want to reiterate that dropping students in the parking lot in the morning is NOT allowed. This is a safety concern and to ensure the safety of students and faculty, we ask that everyone drop off in the carline.
We are 3 months away to the end of school. Spring Break will be March 11-15, 2024. Please make sure that you are in contact with teachers about grades, attendance, and other school matters. If you are not connected to Class Dojo, please make sure this is done immediately.
3rd Grade Parents, information will be sent home next week about the Alabama Literacy Act and How it affects your students. If you have any questions, you can reach out to your child's teacher or administration.
As we continue to move into this month, please remember our School-Wide Goals for Success:
1- Decrease the number of students who are Chronically Absent
2- Close the Achievement Gap of all students at each grade level and subgroups
3- Increase Academic Growth for all students
Remember, some of the things that you can do to assist is ensure that our students are attending school daily, communicate with teachers about student progress, allow students who can read to you and ask questions about what the student has read, allow time for students to write (penmanship, paragraphs, etc.), and allow students to receive ample rest at night.
We have put many measures in place to achieve this goal such as monthly Parent Attendance Meetings at the school for those parents whose students have more than 5 absences; Teachers are increasing the rigor of instruction through grade level materials, high level questioning, guided practice, and strategies that will assist students beyond the classroom.
Please partner with us to achieve our goal.
Below you will also find information that will assist you as we move throughout this month.
Title I Parent Compacts:
Parent Compacts have been sent home. It is very important that these forms are signed and sent back to school. The students name and parent signature must be on these forms. The Parent Compact is an agreement that the school, students, and parents agree to provide the listed items on the form (high quality instruction, teacher/parent conferences, report cards and progress reports sent home, and other parent and student responsibilities). If you have questions, please feel free to contact Yassiry.Rivera@hsv-k12.org.
Student Academic Success: It is very important that we practice Literacy (Reading & Literature) and Numeracy (Math) with our students daily. As we continue to meet as a faculty and staff to develop interventions and enrichment for our students, we are focusing on phonics, vocabulary building, reading comprehension, and basic math skills such as addition, multiplication, division, and fractions. Please see a few exercises below that will assist your student in academic development. Teachers post weekly (monthly) newsletters on their Class Dojo pages. Please take advantage in working with your student at home with the skills asked. We want our students to be successful at all levels of their academic growth.
Absences: Attendance is the law and a must for all school age students. If your student is absent, please provide a doctors' note or parent note upon your student's arrival back to school or email excuse notes to Nicole.Pittsley@hsv-k12.org. Parents are only allowed 7 parent notes a year.
School Hours: 8:00 AM-2:30 PM. The doors of the school open at 7:30 AM. Please make sure your student and his/her teacher know the mode of transportation of how the student is getting home before 12:30 PM. If there is no change in the way your student goes home (student and teacher knows from Day 1), you do not need to let the teacher know. Please reach out with any changes via ClassDojo or call to front office.
Late Students: Parents, please walk your students into school after 8:00 AM to check them in through the front office. We have too many students who come in without parent supervision, please walk in and check students in.
Safety: Parents please do not allow your students to cross the parking lot with no supervision. If there are not crossing guards or another adult in the area, please walk your student over.
No check outs after 2:00 PM
Thank you for all that you do for your student(s) and Williams Elementary School!

What does it mean to be an IB School?
International-mindedness is a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility towards its members. It is an awareness of the interrelatedness of all nations and peoples, and is a recognition of the complexity of these. Internationally minded people appreciate and value the diversity of peoples, cultures, and societies in the world.
The foundations of the PYP program (Primary Year's Program) are the Learner Profile Attributes, Agency, Action, and Exhibition.
