Sunday Scoop with the Supe
March 3, 2024
News and Notes from the VPSS Central Office
From the desk of the Superintendent Tommy Byler
As we head into March, we get to the time of the year where everyone, including myself, begins to get antsy about the upcoming spring events, the wrapping up of the third nine weeks, the prep for testing, and the preparation for staffing and opening positions for the 2024-2025 school year.
With all due respect to the NCAA Basketball Tournament, this is what really should be referred to as "March Madness".
I am asking for all of our stakeholders to step up our games as we have seen a decline in school attendance, an increase in school discipline, and a dropoff in our acadmic efforts and pursuits. It's really nothing new for our system as well as others, but this is the annual reminder that this is not the time to slack off, but rather re-energize our efforts so that we can handle the madness thrown our way.
FINAL TEST PREP ONGOING
While the efforts of our teachers and students is always ongoing, we are getting to the point in the year where our final preps for mandated testing are here. We know our students are so much more than a test, but the state powers that be quantify our efforts by how well our children do on these test. All we can do is work our hardest and ask your children for their best effort and let the chips fall where they may. We have always been successful and I don't see any reason that anything will change.
Our first round of testing begins next week with the state issued ACT to all of our Juniors.
SCHEDULING FOR 24-25
Scheduling each year is never an exact science and this year may be the most difficult ever as we enter the era of charter school choice in Vermilion Parish. Funding and staffing will be affected by this so it is crucial that we are planning ahead to figure out the best ways to prepare for our staffing. In the coming weeks I will be making a plea to our stakeholders leaving our system for Vermilion Charter and set a timeline that will hopefully help our district and the charter prepare in the appropriate way.
FINAL THOUGHTS....
In closing, we have lots of activities on the horizon, make sure you get out and support your students, our students, and continue to play a vital role in the success of the Vermiion Parish School System. You don't get to be a Top Ten district without all playing a role. So thank you for your past efforts, thank you in advance for your future efforts, and thank you for being part of Vermilion.
Vermilion...Where you belong!
