Happy April, Akins' community!

This month, our focus will be on three areas: officer elections and preparation for next year, helping with student events and celebrations, and finalizing May's Teacher Appreciation Week festivities.

The PTSA will hold elections for officer positions at our April meeting. Officers attend two meetings monthly and the time commitment is typically about 3-5 hours per month. We would especially love some teacher representation on the PTSA Board.

We are still accepting nominees for the following positions:

-President (runs meetings, serves as primary representative for the organization)

-Vice President (serves as back-up to the president, helps with fundraising)

-Treasurer (keeps financial records, prepares monthly reports)

-Secretary (takes minutes at each meeting, maintains records for the organization)

-Fundraising Chair (helps organize annual fundraising plan, solicits donations from local businesses)

Our next PTSA meeting is Wednesday, April 3, at 5:30 pm in room 146 (the CCC). We will have translation and babysitting available at this meeting.

At Akins, we celebrate the entire faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week each year by coordinating a week-long celebration of food and fun goodies.

If you would like to contribute to this effort, there are several ways to help.

• Our PSS, Connie Miralrio, can accept donations of small items for goodie bags in the front office (i.e. snacks, lottery tickets, stress balls, etc.--we have 250 staff members)

The PTSA is partnering with the Student Council to help with a candy bar for prom on April 27th.

If you have any clear glass containers (medium to large, any shape is fine) that could be borrowed and returned after the event, they’d be appreciated. Be sure to label them on the bottom with a piece of tape with your name and phone number for ease of return.

We can also accept donations of bags of candy (after-Easter clearance sales are a perfect time to find these at a great price!) or monetary donations to the Student Activity Fund at https://bit.ly/joinakinsptsa2324.

The Akins PTSA is proud to announce the inaugural Akins PTSA Scholarship. This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a senior from Akins who is an active PTSA member who has shown a demonstrated commitment to their community.

To be eligible to apply, students must:

• be a paid PTSA member by March 22, 2024 (deadline extended!)
• be a graduating senior with plans for continuing education after high school
• have at least 75 documented community service hours in high school, including some PTSA-specific hours

The application can be accessed here and the deadline to apply is April 10, 2024.

The best way for our community to be successful is when everyone works together, and that includes students. We would like to boost our student membership this year to allow their voices to be heard in our planning and decision-making.

We hold monthly student PTSA meetings during FIT and have opportunities for students to serve in leadership roles as committee chairs or even as parliamentarian of the PTSA. This is a great way for your student to get involved and to build their resume.

This is also the first year that the PTSA will offer student scholarships and the opportunity for students to earn PTSA service cords. Please encourage your student to join PTSA so that they are eligible for these opportunities.

Student dues are only $10 and can be paid in cash at a meeting or online here.

The Akins Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is a non-profit volunteer organization which serves to support the students, teachers, and staff at Akins Early College High School through volunteering and fundraising.

We have more than 2,600 students at Akins and our goal this year is 150 members. So far, we have 99.

As a member of the PTSA you can attend short monthly meetings throughout the year that will enable you to make suggestions and provide your input. If you don't have time to attend meetings but still want to help, you can choose to become a member and your dues will financially support our annual goals. You can also donate to specific projects at the same link below.

By getting involved or just paying your membership dues, you’ll be part of the solution, helping to make a positive change for our campus and our community. There is no wrong way to PTSA!

What is the CAC?

Campus Advisory Councils are committees of parents, students, business and community representatives, teachers, principals, and other campus staff. The formation of CACs is required by state law (Texas Education Code, §11.251).

What does the CAC do?

Specific functions of CACs include providing review and comment on:

• Campus Educational Program
• Campus Performance
• Campus Improvement Plan
• Campus Staff Development Plan
• Campus-Level Waiver Requests to the State
• Campus Budget

When does the CAC Meet?

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month form 6:30 - 7:30 in room 146. CAC members are strongly encouraged to also attend our monthly PTSA meetings, conveniently scheduled for the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30 pm.
