Dear Parents and Friends of our School Kia Ora/Hello/Kamusta
Kia ora koutou,
Wow it has been a busy fortnight. Congratulations to all the children who took part in the annual Turnbull Cup swimming competition. Swimming lessons in the school pool have been going really well. Skie our swimming instructor has been doing an amazing job. Our school tryathlon is always a highlight on the school calendar! All children participated, some with confidence, others with nerves. Our senior tamariki were wonderful mentors to our junior tamariki and we thank them for assisting and motivating everyone to participate. Thank you to Shelley and Tracy for co-ordinating this fun event.
Congratulations to Mrs Oliver and Mrs Fuller who have both been appointed Within School Leaders (WSL) for Te Kahui Ako o Taranaki Mohoao for 2024. There are 11 WSL's across our Kahui Ako. This role involves promoting best teaching practice and strengthening the use of an inquiry approach to teaching and learning. Mrs Oliver will be focusing on cultural capacity and Mrs Fuller boys and engagement and the impacts of sleep and technology on this.
Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday 8th March. This is a Ministry of Education allocated day. All primary teachers across our Kahui Ako will be working together at Stratford Primary School on this day.
Personal qualities for our Toko School Leaders include:
– Displaying what it means to be a Toko Learning Star.
– Showing respect, responsibility and making the right choices.
– Working hard to be the best you can be.

SPORTS UPDATE
Rural Cluster Swimming Sports
On Tuesday 12th March we have the rural schools cluster swimming sports for children in years 5-8. These will be at the Stratford pools from 10.00- 1.30pm ( approx).
We will be travelling to and from school by bus - leaving at 9.15am.
All Y5-8 children are expected to participate as there are both non competitive and competitive events. For children who really lack confidence in the new big pool in town - the middle pool will be used. Children will return back to school on buses afterwards. Students will need to be wearing their Toko school uniform as well as warm clothes to get changed into. They will also need to take water and their lunch to the event. We are looking forward to a great event. If you are intending on taking your child home from swimming sports can you please let the school know by Thursday 7th March. The buses are very costly.
We are also in need of parents that are able to help with either time keeping and judging at this event. If you are able to commit to this role can you please either let Tracy or Shelley know
Any questions please let Shelley know.
Year 3-8 Hockey Tournament
On Friday 15th March we have a Year 3-5 team and two Y6-8 teams playing in the interschool hockey tournament. Notices were sent home last Thursday with all children involved. Please note all players require a mouth guard, shin pads and long socks. Please let Shelley or Tracy if you are having trouble borrowing these ( please attempt before contacting us as we have limited resources). We have sticks that we can supply to those that need them.
Turnbull Cup
We had 8 swimmers attend Turnball Cup last Wednesday night, with two teams in the small schools relay. Both teams gave it their best and had a fun time competing.
We had plenty of individual swimmers swim 25/50 metres, and a big congratulations to Cohen who came away with 3rd place in the Year 6 boys 25mtr freestyle.
Beginning of the Year Reminders - Digital Safety
While we are at the beginning of the year, it's a good time to put out a few reminders around digital safety.
Remember to check in with what your child is watching/playing. Sometimes they end up on inappropriate sites without realising it.
It's a good idea to set an amount of time that your child is allowed on a device - many of the applications make it difficult for children to know when to stop.
Keep devices out of bedrooms overnight - if they are in bedrooms they become a temptation to use and then it can stop children getting a good sleep.
Make sure your child has a good routine for charging their device - that way it isn’t flat when they arrive at school.
If anyone is looking at buying a device for school and wants recommendations around the type of device to purchase, I am happy to help. Drop me an email at sasha.hancock@toko.school.nz or give the office a call and ask for me.
