CODE NEXT ALERT!!!
ACTION ALERT: House Committee Hearing Bill This Tuesday to Take Away Your Protest Rights
The City of Austin bailout bill, HB 2989, is being heard this Tuesday April 13 before the House Land and Resource Management Committee. Please call or sign up against this bill. Get your friends and neighbors too as well.
HB 2989 would allow the City of Austin to overturn last year’s court decision and decimate your property rights. City Hall could move forward on its controversial CodeNEXT rezoning plan without providing property owners notice of proposed zoning changes or protest rights in most situations.
Here is what you can do before Tuesday: Call now the offices of the two key committee members, Committee Chair Joe Deshotel and Vice-Chair Ben Leman, and tell them you oppose HB 2989 and explain very briefly why. We recommend Democrats call Chair Deshotel (D-Beaumont) (512-463-0662) and Republicans call Vice-Chair Ben Leman (R-Brenham) (512-463-0600).
You may also submit public comments on HB 2989 online at the following link before the committee meeting starts: https://comments.house.texas.gov/home
Here is what you can do this Tuesday: Go to the Capitol early and sign up inside at a testimony kiosk in opposition to HB 2989. Testimony is limited but signing in in opposition is very effective. You can then leave and not wait for the hearing to start, which could start any time from 8 am till late in the evening. (You must wear a mask, enter on the north end of the Capitol and have a rapid test on site or provide proof of vaccination.)
Below are talking points on what will happen if state lawmakers pass HB 2989:
- The City of Austin and other municipalities will be allowed to rezone all of a community’s residential and commercial properties without providing owners with notice or giving them an opportunity to file protest petitions
- The City of Austin and other municipalities will be allowed to change the definition of single-family zoning to include 4-6 units on every single-family lot, without providing property owners with notice
- Property taxes will skyrocket, Austin’s affordability crisis will worsen, and more low- and middle-income families will be displaced from Austin!
