The Return of the GWA Writing Center
Despite the exponential rate of change in a society now dominated by screens, videos and emojis, a vital skill for a college graduate today remains the timeless ability to communicate with clarity and precision, both orally and in writing. Let’s focus just on quality writing: It builds critical thinking skills. Organizing thoughts into coherent sentences is one mark of a clear, disciplined thinker. Good writing reflects a commitment to a painstaking process, one full of drafts, re-works, and revisions. Isn’t writing similar to success in life, learning from one’s mistakes and “course correcting” along the way? Moreover, writing enhances self-expression, spawning creativity, the art of inspirational storytelling, and the exploration of deep emotions.
At GWA, this fall we are bringing back the Writing Center to serve middle and upper school students, regardless of whether they are gifted writers working on a college essay for UGA or Vanderbilt or in need of remediation to complete a middle school science project. Each student has a unique writing style, background knowledge, and myriad strengths and weaknesses. In the Writing Center, all students will receive individual instruction and feedback -- for any academic subject.
Our AP English teacher Melissa Page will lead the resurrected Writing Center. She comes to the director position with 22 years of teaching experience in English, five of those years at GWA. Mrs. Page developed her skills and passion for teaching writing when she began teaching at the University of Georgia in the Language and Literacy Department. While there, she earned a fellowship with the Red Clay Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project. She was trained as a writer focused on teaching adolescent writers and was elected to the leadership team. She has led professional development for teachers in Athens and Atlanta and co-founded the Writing Center at St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta. In addition to running the George Walton Writing Center, Mrs. Page will continue to serve as the English Department Chair and AP English Literature teacher.
“I’m thrilled to be re-opening the Writing Center and extending this individualized learning experience to all middle and upper school students. I love working with students where they are and helping them gain confidence and independence.”
GWA aspires for every student to become a good writer. The return of the Writing Center under the leadership of Melissa Page is a big step to make that a reality.

Field Day Fun!
We are counting down to Field Day 2024! Here are a few reminders from Coach Martin and Coach Sperin:
Games start at 9 a.m. and should wrap up by 11:30 a.m.
Students should wear their specified colored t-shirts from SCOTTEEZ. If they did not get a shirt, they should reach out to their individual teachers.
No bathing suits or flip flops.
Closed toe shoes only.
Students may bring a change of clothes and a towel - there will be stations with water.
Please no water guns or water balloons.
Be a good sport and have a GREAT attitude.
Final Words
On Sunday evening, the Gavel Club gathered in the cafeteria for the final meeting of the year. One by one, our senior speakers took to the podium and delivered their final speeches before their fellow Gavel members, faculty advisors, their parents and guests. Their speeches were truly inspired - full of memories and laughter and advice for the younger members of Gavel. Nearly every speech urged the underclassmen to take hold of the precious opportunities afforded them by George Walton Academy and to make the most of each and every day they have here. Congratulations to our 2024 Competent Toastmasters (those who have delivered ten speeches as a member of Gavel Club):

Fifth-Grade Champs
Last Friday, our fifth graders participated in the CHAMPS graduation. This ceremony is a culmination of a nine-week course offered by the Walton County Sheriff's Office. CHAMPS (previously known as DARE) stands for Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety and teaches fifth-grade students across the country about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, nicotine, as well as internet safety, bullying, choices and consequences and peer pressure. Students were required to create a poster at the end of the course explaining what they learned in their favorite CHAMPS class and the top three posters are chosen to receive a medal. Also, one student from each class was given a special award of the CHAMPS mascot for being the student who most exemplifies the blood hound by being focused and brave and is someone who does the right thing when no one’s looking. Congratulations to all of the winners and special thanks to Lt. Charlie Rodriguez!
