Hands On Science Through Dissection
Spring is the season for students to dig deep into all they have learned over the course of the school year. For our upper elementary students, this includes dissection in their science classes--a truly incredible hands-on learning experience.
The hands-on approach of dissection allows students to see, touch and explore the world of biology. Dissection strengthens students’ comprehension of biological systems through hands-on exploration. When applied to their own bodies, this translates to a greater understanding of human biology.
Our 4th grade students dissect a cowor sheep’s eye, while sixth grade students dissect frogs. All students have the ability to opt out of dissection if they so choose, instead participating with a mock dissection model.
We're so grateful to the Los Altos Educational Foundation for supporting our incredible science program and hands on learning experiences, such as dissection, for our students. Have you donated to LAEF this year to support academic programs in all of our schools? If not, there is still time! You can donate here.
Students Shine at End of Year Concerts
This month, all of our elementary schools hosted Spring concerts where students showcased their musical talents and growth for families and their community.
Our music program provides performance opportunities for all students at all grade levels. Students in grade Kindergarten through third grade participate in weekly performing arts lessons customized to each elementary school site and supported by the school's PTA. Our upper grade elementary students have the opportunity to choose an instrument they learn to play. The upper grade music program is sponsored by the Los Altos Educational Foundation.
It was such a joy to attend the Spring concerts this year and I am so proud of our students and music teachers who put on amazing performances!
Los Altos School District Wins the Hoffman Award for Computer Science
The Santa Clara County School Boards Association recognizes exemplary educational programs that have significant impact on students in Santa Clara County.
We are thrilled to announce that the Los Altos School District received the Hoffman Award for its Computer Science program this year! A pioneer in computer science education, LASD started its program in 2009. Now, students in all grades K-8 participate in the program through grade-level appropriate curriculum that sparks their interest and builds their skills in coding to prepare them for future success.
Computer science is not just important for future-ready skills, it is also an essential skill to foster creativity, collaboration and project-based learning. Learn more about our program in the video below, or check out our website for more information.
