Artist Statement
Title of Piece: A Palatable Terrain
Food itself is a landscape. It encompasses numerous meaningful experiences in all ages,
and brings people together from around the world. Especially with social media, we all itch to
create and try the newest fad, whether it be cloud bread or any variation of the countless
renditions of overnight oats. Nourishment also plays a role in culture, as seen in this piece. The
chicharron stars and far off concha hills reflect my mother’s Chicano culture, but there are other
references to events that influenced me as a child. Often when looking at the sun set, I would
relate the sky to looking like cotton candy, which is why the clouds represent cotton candy and
the sun a giant lemon, both hurting your eyes and nipping sourly at your tongue. I remember as a
kid going to a pizza joint and getting a cannoli, which is seen hoisting up the pizza next to the
honeycomb hill. The waterfall is ramen noodles with soft-boiled eggs, green onions, and sesame
seeds, and is seen coming out of a bowl, the only non-edible object in the piece. Surrounding this
is a field of kale and various colored cauliflower, with broccoli and carrot trees. The mushrooms,
specifically the morels, reflect when I go foraging with my family, and how excited we get when
we find the morels, for they are so delicious and rare. Acting as cliffs and surrounding the
waterfall are lasagna, mashed potatoes, and steak. I incorporated the baked potatoes in the piece
because my youngest brother loves them, even having a baked potato bar for his second birthday
party, and when I was younger I loved them so much I did a “baked potato dance” whenever we
had them in a meal. The coconut hot springs allude to a phase I went through where I drank
coconut water consistently, and also to my Dad, who loves anything with coconut in it. The
pineapple is another reference to my Mom, who adores it, and the tomatoes showcase my second
youngest brother’s love for eating them straight from the garden. The honey is another reference
to him, for if we’re not careful he’ll simply drink the honey straight from the jar. Thus, food is
truly a reflection of culture and seasoned practice, and I’m so grateful for all it's done to bring
my family together.
