Cedar Park and the surrounding areas will be experiencing a total solar eclipse on April 8th, just 5 short weeks from today! At HMS, we have been busy planning a memorable learning experience for our students while they observe the solar eclipse. The following is an outline of our plans for the big event:
- Science teachers will be having discussions with the students about what they will experience and how to be safe during the eclipse on Friday, April 5th (we will not be teaching the specific solar system science involved in the eclipse until the day after the event so as to not "spoil the wonder" of the event itself).
- On the day of the eclipse, HMS will have a modified lunch/bell schedule and all 3 grade level lunches will be completed before 1:00 pm.
- Our wonderful HMS PTA has graciously donated eclipse glasses for all students present at school on August 8th to use during the eclipse so that, weather permitting, students can be outside from 1:00-2:00pm to experience the eclipse (totality occurs from 1:35-1:38 p.m.).
- From 1:00-2:00 pm, the main office switchboard will not be manned so that our office staff can also experience the eclipse. We would ask you to schedule appointments either before or after this time. Should an emergency arise where a parent would need to check-out their student from school during the time the students are outside, this can be accomplished, but it might take a few extra minutes.

Attention 6-7th Grade Parents:
The AVID enrollment process for the 2024-2025 school year has begun!
AVID Stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a college and career readiness program designed to help students develop the skills needed to be successful in their college and future careers. AVID is not an intervention, or remedial course; rather, it is a course to fast-track students to advanced courses and is especially beneficial for students who have not previously been in advanced courses. Click here for more AVID information.
HMS AVID APPLICATION (must be completed by student logged into his/her LISD account). Applications due NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, MARCH 19th.
Please contact Della Robinson (della.robinson@leanderisd.org) if you have any questions.
