April 2024 Family Newsletter
Parents and Guardians,
President's Day until Spring Break is always a tough period in our schools. During that time period our students usually participate in the State testing series at all grade levels, which does put added stress upon students and staff. I have included two more assessment periods to be aware of, these are listed below. We appreciate the support of our families during this time, and hope you experienced a very restful Spring Break. When we return, we want our students to finish the year strong. Our seniors will be getting ready for their final two months before graduation. Our other high school students must finish the year in great standing to stay on track for their intended graduation years. For our junior high students, it is important that they keep building a foundation for success that will follow them into high school.
We are providing an incentive for our students to finish the year strong. We want our students to be able to attend the We Learned It, We Earned It Field Day. This event will be available to all students who meet the following criteria during the 4th Quarter.
- Discipline- No out-of-school suspensions during the 4th quarter.
- Tardies- Must not be tardy more than four times during all aspects of the school day. This includes being late to school.
- Attendance- Must have four or less unexcused absences in the 4th quarter.
All students who achieve all of these goals will be able to attend the event on Wednesday, May 29th. This goal is not hard to achieve, many of our students achieve this goal daily. We want to continue to recognize those students.
Illinois Science Assessment
Students in grades 8 and 11 will participate in the Illinois Science Assessment on April 15th, 16th, and 18th.
Spring Benchmark Assessments
Our students will participate in our Spring Benchmark Assessments during the weeks of April 22nd and April 29th. These are our district assessments that utilize the NWEA Map Framework. Our students participated in these assessments during the Fall and Winter time period as well.
Family Wellness Night
Galesburg High School will host a Family Wellness Night on Thursday, April 11th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This event is open to students in grades 9-12 and their families. Families will have the opportunity to make a healthy snack, participate in a gardening activity, and enjoy a meditation and mindfulness activity. This is a great opportunity for families to learn about stress-reducing activities. We hope you can attend. Click here to RSVP. Additional information is provided below.
Hope Week
Galesburg High School Student Council will kick off Hope Week on Monday, April 15th. Hope Week is a color-inspired spirit week that dedicates a color for each day of the week to raise awareness of certain types of cancer. We encourage all students in grades 7-12 to participate by wearing the dedicated color for each inspirational day. Hope Week will conclude with the Annual GHS 5K Glow Run/Walk on April 19th. This is a great opportunity to exercise and support the fight against cancer. It is also a great way to celebrate the lives of family and friends lost to this dreaded disease. You can pre-register for this event or at the event. See below for details. We hope you can attend this awesome event.
Junior High Movie on the Lawn
Galesburg Junior High will be hosting a Family Movie Night on the Lawn from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17th. This event will be held in our courtyard and families are encouraged to bring either chairs or a blanket to sit on during the movie. Food will be provided. We hope you can join us for this fun, family event.
GHS Spring Musical: Rock of Ages
The stage inside Roland Hegg Performing Arts Center will never be the same as the Galesburg High School Theater Department will be performing their Spring Musical: Rock of Ages on April 19th and 20th at 7:00 p.m., and on April 21st at 2:00 p.m. This event is open to the public and free to students in Galesburg CUSD 205. We encourage you to invite family and friends from near and far to enjoy this event. Come enjoy some of your favorite songs of the past and be entertained by a group of very dedicated and talented students. We hope everyone can attend.
Shine in 205
This program is aimed to provide recognition for district employees who go the extra mile for students in CUSD No. 205. Each month there will be two staff members selected from the nominations. Parents, guardians, co-workers, and community members are welcome to nominate a CUSD No. 205 employee. To nominate a staff member please use this Form.
School Start Times
A reminder that our students are expected to be sitting in their classrooms at 7:40 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; and by 9:40 a.m. on Wednesdays. We are noticing that the traffic at the parent drop-off lane at West Circle Drive is getting very light around 7:35 a.m. Please use this route to drop off your students so they can be on time to school.
Anti-Bullying
Recently you should have received an email from me regarding the school district's anti-bullying policy and procedures for reporting bullying. Please visit the following link which provides more information on the topic of Bullying: Bullying Prevention and Response
Thank you for your time in reading this newsletter.
