SHES Library Update
February 2024

What's happening in Library?
PK3 and PK4
Our youngest learners are exploring letters sounds and rhymes through stories and songs. We are also discussing ways to manage our big feelings.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Students are learning the basics of computer science with the programs code.org and Kodable. Students are using sequence to create algorithms and are practicing debugging skills. We are discussing how these terms apply to real-life as well as computer science.
2nd and 3rd Grade
Students are exploring creating original code with Scratch Jr. I am amazed with the fun and creative projects they have been working on.

Black-Eyed Susan Picture Book Award
The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is a student choice award for the state of Maryland that has been awarded each year since 1992. The award seeks to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature.
Each year, 15 picture books are nominated to receive the award. Students across the state read and vote for their favorite. Which book will win this year?

Caring for Library Books
We are really focusing on taking better care of library books this school year! Please review the book care guidelines below. We have been discussing how to keep water bottles and food in a safe place so they do not accidentally spill on our books. If you would like, students may use a large plastic bag to keep library books safe in their book bags.
- Clean Hands: Before I touch a library book, I will make sure my hands are clean. No sticky fingers on the pages!
- Safe Place: I will find a safe spot at home to keep my library book. Away from pets, food, and water, so it doesn't get dirty or wet.
- No Food or Drinks: I promise not to eat or drink while reading a library book. Accidents can happen, and I want to keep the book clean.
- Turn Pages Carefully: I will turn the pages gently, using my fingers and not anything like pencils or crayons. We want the pages to stay nice.
- Read Away from Water: I will read my library book away from bathtubs, pools, and sinks. Water can damage books!
- Keep Away from Little Siblings (and Pets too!): If I have little brothers or sisters, I'll keep my library book where they can't reach it. I don't want them to accidentally tear pages.
- Use a Bookmark: I'll use a bookmark, a piece of paper, or just remember the page number to help me keep my place. Folding the pages can damage the book.
- Ask for Help: If I accidentally spill something on the book or if it gets damaged, I will tell a grown-up right away. They can help fix it.
- Return on Time: When it's time to return the library book, I'll make sure to bring it back to school by the due date. That way, other kids can enjoy it too.
How are library books different from 100 Book books?
Front Cover
Our library books are hardcover. Some have numbers on the cover. Please leave the number stickers (and any other) stickers right where they are.
Back Cover
The back cover will have a barcode on the top right corner. The barcode will indicate that this book belongs to SHES. A stamp inside the book will also show that it belongs to the Snow Hill Elementary Library.
Spine
Our library books have Call Numbers (and letters) on the spine.
