March Updates
Waqaa ANCCS families! It is hard to believe it is March already and that spring break is just around the corner. We hope that you and your student enjoy the week off from school. Spring break is a great time for students to rest and recharge before the final push to the finish line during 4th quarter. At the same time, maintaining routines--including regular bedtimes--is important to helping your student transition back to school after the break. Please check out the spring break learning suggestions listed below to keep your student engaged in learning over the break.
Our students have many things to look forward to after returning from spring break. Our 2nd-8th grade students will be visiting the Anchorage Museum and our preschool students will have several community helpers visit their classroom. Additionally, our 3rd-8th grade students will be preparing for AK STAR testing in Math and Reading (as well as Science for grades 5 and 8). The AK STAR test is an opportunity for students to show their growth and understanding in important skills in these content areas. You can support your student's achievement on this assessment by encouraging them to try their best and show what they know and ensuring that they get a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast before the test.
School Climate & Connectedness Survey
The School Climate & Connectedness Survey (SCCS) is a state-wide survey conducted annually to gather feedback from staff, students, and families about individual schools. The SCCS measures positive school climate, how connected students feel to adults and peers, social and emotional learning (SEL), and observed risk behaviors at school or school events. Please take a few moments to provide us with this valuable feedback. The SCCS helps us identify what we are doing well in addition to guiding our areas for growth.

Spring Break Opportunity for 7th & 8th Grade Students
Yup'ik Word of the Week
Reflect: Ask your student what they've learned in school about ellalirturtet, mentors, elders, and ancestors.
Connect: Who are your ellalirturtet? Share a story with your student about what you have learned from the mentors, elders, or ancestors in your life.
Explore: How can you and your student give thanks to or honor the ellalirturtet in your life or community?
Spring into Learning this Spring Break!
Spring Break is a wonderful time for students to relax and connect with their family, but it also can be an opportunity for continued learning. Set a goal with your student to complete tasks on the choice board above. Can they complete one a day? Can they check off every item on the board? The apps and games (including iReady math and Boost reading) available on your student's ASD Clever account are a great resource to keep students engaged in learning outside of school. Many of the apps and programs are accessible on phones and tablets in addition to computers.

Spring Lottery for 2024-2025
ASD Lottery is open until March 22! Please share with any friends or neighbors who may be interested in ANCCS for their child.
Families interested in joining ANCCS (including current ANCCS Pre-K students planning to attend ANCCS for Kindergarten and beyond) need to apply through the ASD lottery. Current ANCCS K-8 students do not need to reapply. The District utilizes a randomized lottery system to provide equal opportunity for all students who would like to participate in alternative schools or programs other than their child's neighborhood school.
Please visit the ASD Lottery Website for more information about the lottery or call the office at (907) 742-1370.

Attendance Update
ASD Goal: Every student will attend school at least 90 percent of the time.
ANCCS Goal: Less than 8 is Great!
Did you know that students who do not attend school 90% of the time are considered chronically absent?
At ANCCS, 62% of our students attended school 90% of the time in February. This means that 37% of our students were chronically absent in February. While we want to see 0% of our students be chronically absent, we also applaud the dedication of our families in getting our students to school every day. Our February attendance rate was nearly 10% higher than that of all of ASD and our students attend school without the help of bussing. Quyana, families! Getting your child to school is an investment in their future and in their healthy social, emotional, and academic development.
Absences add up! There are 15 school days in March. This means that if students miss more than 1.5 school days this month, they will be considered chronically absent for the month of March. Make a plan with your student to attend school every day this month.
