Equipping Everyone for Excellence
Sylacauga City Schools Newsletter - April 2025
Message from our Superintendent
SCS Family:
April is upon us. Hope each of you had a restful spring break and are ready to finish the year strong! April and May are always busy months as we prepare to close out the school year. Be mindful of testing dates and be sure your students get plenty of rest and are on time for school. These state assessments are important as they determine whether grade-level standards have been mastered. Please take advantage of the summer learning opportunities that will be shared soon. Thank you for your continued support as we Equip Everyone for Excellence!

Workforce Development
March was a busy month for Career and Technical Education. NLMS students attended the World of Works (WOW) event in Oxford, SHS students were unable to attend due to weather conditions.
WOW Event March 11:
Students from Nichols Lawson Middle School had a great time exploring career opportunities in various industries at the World of Works (WOW) event at the Oxford Civic Center. Representatives from in demand career fields set up interactive booths, offering hands-on activities and valuable insights into workforce needs. This experience will help our 8th students make informed decisions about their Career and Technical Education pathways and future careers.
Counselors & Career Coach Stay Busy Supporting Student Future Plans
Counselors and the Career Coach have been hard at work helping students prepare for their futures. Individual meetings have focused on class registration for SHS and Dual Enrollment, with course selections aligned to students’ goals and graduation requirements. Mrs. Vincent has met daily with students to ensure they’re properly enrolled in CACC classes for the fall semester. Meanwhile, seniors have been busy submitting scholarship applications and completing FAFSA forms as graduation draws near.
Seniors, completing your FAFSA forms is a graduation requirement, so please see Mrs. Middlebrooks if you have any questions.
Students, check course verifications online, The last day for course selection and schedule changes is Tuesday, April 15th.
Hospitality and Tourism Students Participate in Real-World Customer Service
Students in the Hospitality and Tourism Program rolled up their sleeves and stepped into real-world roles to practice their customer service skills.
On April 3rd, the Event Planning class stepped in to prepare and serve delicious treats for our Field Day celebration. This special event honored students who achieved perfect attendance or made the honor roll—and our hospitality students made it even sweeter!
On April 4th, the Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism class focused on table service skills, including proper table setting, napkin folding, and even navigating tough conversations with challenging customers. These experiences are part of a comprehensive unit on customer service, which emphasizes:
First impressions
Customer relations
Professional table presentation
This week, students will put their knowledge to the test as they take the Guest Service Gold exam—an industry-recognized credential that demonstrates their professionalism and workforce readiness.
Work-Based Learning Interviews
Several students who selected Cooperative Education – Work-Based Learning as their capstone course for next year in a CTE (Career and Technical Education) pathway participated in interviews with Mrs. Sutton on Friday, April 4th. Both a completed application and a successful interview are required for selection into the course.
Students accepted into the Cooperative Education program will earn course credit while gaining real-world experience through employment with an approved job provider. This opportunity allows students to build their resumes, develop valuable career skills, and contribute meaningfully to their community.
Students Earn Fiber Optics Certification over Spring Break
Several students in the Information Technology pathway participated in a hands-on ACCS Skills for Success Workshop over Spring Break, in cooperation with Central Alabama Community College and SAFE's Earn to Learn Program. The Fiber Optics certification earned by the students is a college and career readiness indicator for the Information Technology Program. SInce it was supported by SAFE's Earn to Learn Program, the students received $10 an hour for their two days of learning the essentials of handling fiber optic cable.
