February 2024
Folk Dance
Second and third graders shared many folk dances from around the world during a PTO program on February 8. Dances featured included Los Machetes and La Raspa from Mexico, The Chimes of Dunkirk from France, the Sasha from Russia, the Heel-Toe Polka, and American folk dance. To culminate the evening, members of the audience were asked to partner up with a child on the dance floor. Then the students worked with their new partner to teach some American folk dance moves including swing, do-si-do, and promenade. Then everyone did an American folk dance together to the tune of "Old Brass Wagon."
Archery
Fourth and fifth graders have started archery instruction through the National Archery in Schools Program. This program supplies the school with all the archery equipment for as long as their curriculum is taught. Archery instruction is being implemented through the physical education program under the direction of Mr. Mason and Coach O. This has been a new experience for many of our students and they have been so excited!
Read Across America
Greendale Elementary will celebrate Read Across America from March 11-15. We will celebrate with many guest readers, dress up days, daily masked readers on the morning news, and video book reviews provided by students. Back again this year is the Book Character Potato contest. All potatoes must be turned in by Wednesday, March 13 with judging taking place on Thursday, March 14. There will also be a bookmark contest with the winning book mark being copied and placed in the library for students to use for their personal bookmarks. We look forward to a fun week celebrating the joy of reading.
Making Learning Fun
Teachers at Greendale Elementary are always looking for creative ways to engage students in their learning. A great example of this is first grade students learning the digraphs sh and ch. They used shaving cream to practice spelling words with these sounds. It was such a fun way to combine a sensory activity with our phonics lesson!
