Longfellow Library Spring 2022
LIBRARY HAPPENINGS
So much learning has been happening at the Longfellow Library! After spring, students continued their regular library visits with their English classes to support their independent reading goals. In history, all grades learned about Copyright and Fair Use, through engaging Common Sense Media lessons to provide students with a foundational understanding of the importance of citing their sources. If you would like to extend the conversation about copyright and fair use at home, here is a family activity (7th & 8th grade activity: in English & in español) from Common Sense Media.
This year also marked our first launch of the 30 Book Challenge to support students' independent reading. Thirty-seven (37!) Longfellow sixth graders successfully completed the 30 Book Challenge and were rewarded with a pizza party thanks to the organization of Ms. Hersey on the library lawn!
On Tuesday, May 3rd, BUSD Middle School Libraries hosted its seventh annual Battle of the Books competition back in person at the Berkeley Adult School. Students and families enjoyed socializing before the competition and patronized a taco truck and ice cream truck on site. Our sixth grade and eighth grade teams took 2nd place at the district competition.
Library visits in the month of May were focused on celebrating our reading in each grade this past school year. Each grade also had the opportunity to meet with Andrea Mullarkey, our youth librarian at the Berkeley Public Library: Tarea Pittman Hall South Branch to learn about this year's BPL Summer Reading program and sign up for a public library card.
Thanks to the American Federation of Teacher's Initiative: Reading Opens Up the World, over 80 free books were distributed to students during the last week of school!
We wish you and your family a wonderful summer break full of love and learning and of course, reading!
