Decatur community,
In prior messages, I have shared my grandfather's background in movies and a few of those memories that have stuck with me. We all have favorites, leasts favorites, and movies that stick out for some reason or another.
This something has me thinking of movies and shows that stood out because their title was a number. Here are a few examples:
-300, the ancient Greece, epic tale of a Spartan battle involving 300 soldiers.
- 7, the psychological thriller from back in the 90's starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman about the 7 deadly sins.
- 42, the movie about the life of baseball legend Jackie Robinson and the year 1942.
- 1492, a movie about Columbus and the trip to the new world that occurred during that year.
- 24 I figured I could toss in a TV show about a frantic task to stop a catastrophe in 24 hours.
I could go and on with movies with titles including a number and words. Examples could be Sixteen Candles, Apollo 13, Eight is Enough, 50 First Dates, and 101 Dalmations.
This past Saturday, the number 1000 jumped out and reminded me that some numbers stick with us. Here's a script for 1000. A sophomore student from the small, Kansas town of Oberlin set personal goals, worked extremely hard to reach them, and ultimately came out on top as a State Powerlifting Champion. Both the countless hours of working hard in the gym and consuming just the right amount of calories to stay within his weight limit paid off for a student that will have two more years to shine and repeat.
Why 1000?
With a bench press of 270, a squat of 470, and a clean of 260, Theo Butterfield lifted exaclty 1000 lbs to become the 2024 KEMFA 1A State Powerlifting Champion in the 181 lb division.
Congrautlations, Theo!
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to the DCHS Band. This past Thursday at the State Large Group Festival in Colby, the band received a I score and First Dvision plaque. I loved how excited and proud Mr. Persinger was when he showed me the plaque on Friday.
Shoutout to the entire staff for their flexibility. At one point this week, I was covering classes, Mrs. Springer was covering classes, Mr. Gehring was covering classes, our librarian Mrs. Fortin was covering classes, and that was all in the same day. Several teachers covered extra classes or took students in as well. This is only possible with a staff that will do almost anything to help each other out.
Shoutout to the students for their efforts on the State Assessments. State assessments came to a close this past week with our last class, the juniors, finalizing their Science Assessment. The rest of the week was committed to make-up tests. Hopefully, we will get results by the end of the year so that we can use the data to set goals for the future.
Shoutout to our building paraprofessionals. On a daily basis, I watch our paras work very hard with our students, and I am impressed with how self-motivated they are. We are lucky to have the many years of experience that they bring to the building.
Shoutout to 8th grade track athlete Kaden Sowers. Sowers is a natural athlete that participates in throwing events, running events, and jumping events. This past weekend he beat the JH school record in the discus with a throw of 122 feet.
Shoutout to 8th grade track athlete and distance runner Trevor Witt. Trevor broke a school record in the mile, shaving off over 7 seconds with a time of 5:37. Witt, who had a very successful JH cross country career is showing that he will be a force to be reckoned with in distance running in the years to come.
Shoutout to freshman Josiah Pattangall on his 2nd place finish in the 173 lb division at State Powerlifting. It's a great accomplishment, and he is only a freshman. Here are his results:
Bench: 225 lb = 9th
Squat: 405 lb = 2nd
Clean: 215 lb = 10th
Overall: 845 lb 2nd (first was 885 lb)
Below are some pictures of Theo and Josiah.
Pattangall on the Podium Takes 2nd in State in the 173 lb Division
Theo with His State Champ Bench of 270 lb.
Theo Butterfield is the State Champion in Powerlfiting
Here are Theo's results:
Bench: 270 lb = State Champion
Squat: 470 lb = State Champion
Clean: 260 lb = 4th
Overall = State Champion
