March 14, 2024
We provide this recap of our school board meetings as part of our commitment to providing timely updates for students, families, staff, and the community.
Introducing "Murphy's Minute" Video Series
We get questions all the time about our local Board of Education. For example, how does a school board work? Who can be a school board member? When are school board meetings, and how can I participate? To answer questions like these, we are launching a biweekly video series called “Murphy’s Minute,” featuring Board Chair Tyler Murphy. Each episode will offer our community an explanation of the board’s roles, responsibilities, service to the community, advocacy, meeting schedules, and decisions impacting our students, schools, and families. This series will also feature student hosts from several of our secondary schools.
"Murphy’s Minute" can be found here in the Board Buzz, on our district's website, and on our FCPS social media platforms. Watch the first episode below:
Superintendent's Report
Family and Community Engagement (FACE)
The board heard from FACE Director Miranda Scully, who talked about the engagement and outreach portion of the district's Strategic Plan. "There must be essential conditions in place in order for family and community engagement to thrive," she said, noting that such efforts should be systemic, integrated, and sustainable.
Scully and her staff have worked to put a structure in place that promotes alignment and consistency throughout district offices and schools. This includes establishing a district core team and advisory team as well as a school-level network. "We look forward to strengthening this work in partnership with our families," Scully said.
School Board Action
Operations -- At its next meeting, the board will consider the purchase of 20 school buses to make up for the COVID-year gap, the continuation of a $1 lease of the Meadowbrook Golf Course to Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, the initial project application for construction of a new Henry Clay High School, and HVAC repairs at various schools.
Board Calendar -- The school board's 2024-25 meetings calendar is also among the consent items slated for approval at the March 25 action meeting. Members proposed adjusting the planning session to Thursday, Aug. 8, to avoid a crunch during the first week of school and meeting in person rather than virtually like June and July. They also agreed to move a planning session to Thursday, April 17, because Spring Break is later than usual in 2025.
How to Watch the Board Meetings
The public is welcome to attend planning sessions and action meetings in person at the John D. Price Administration Building, 450 Park Place. The monthly action meetings are also livestreamed on the FCPS YouTube channel and the district's Video on Demand service.
