Salem Junior General Monthly Newsletter-March 2024
Dear Elementary Families,
As March ushers in the vibrant energy of spring, we are excited to embrace a month filled with growth, learning, and community engagement. This season of renewal is the perfect backdrop for the array of activities and educational themes we have planned, all designed to enrich our students' experiences and foster a supportive and dynamic school environment.
Character Trait of the Month - Perseverance: This month, we shine a spotlight on the character trait of perseverance, encouraging our students to embrace challenges with resilience and determination. We believe in the power of persistence and are committed to nurturing this quality in every student, recognizing its vital role in achieving success and overcoming obstacles.
Sixth Grade Drama Production - "Seussical": We are thrilled to extend an invitation to you for our sixth-grade drama production of "Seussical." This enchanting musical is a testament to our students' creativity and hard work, promising an evening of entertainment and whimsy that brings the imaginative world of Dr. Seuss to life.
Celebrate Read Across America: We're delighted to celebrate National Read Across America Day, honoring the joy of reading and the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss. Our school has planned a spirited week of themed dress-up days, from silly socks to wacky outfits, culminating in a special Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) session. We invite your child to join in the fun, showcasing their creativity and love for reading as we pay tribute to Dr. Seuss's legacy. Let's make reading an adventure and inspire our students to explore the endless possibilities that books offer.
Open House - Showcasing Student Work: Join us for our Open House, a showcase of our students' dedication and achievements across various disciplines. This event offers a glimpse into the daily learning and creativity that flourish within our school, highlighting the impressive work our students have accomplished.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in making our school community a nurturing and vibrant place for all students.
Monthly Character Trait for March- Perseverance
As part of our ongoing commitment to foster not only academic excellence but also character development in our students, we are focusing on the vital trait of perseverance throughout the month of March. Perseverance, the ability to keep going and not give up even in the face of adversity, is a key determinant of success in every sphere of life.
In our fast-paced and often challenging world, teaching our children to persevere is more important than ever. It is the foundation upon which they can build the resilience necessary to navigate obstacles, pursue their goals, and ultimately, realize their full potential. Here are some practical strategies you can employ at home to nurture this invaluable trait in your children:
1. Model Perseverance: Children learn a great deal from observing the adults in their lives. When they see you tackling challenges without giving up, they are more likely to emulate that behavior.
2. Encourage Problem-Solving: Instead of stepping in to resolve every difficulty, encourage your child to find solutions to their problems. This fosters independence and resilience, essential components of perseverance.
3. Praise Effort, Not Just Achievement: Recognize and commend your child's effort, persistence, and improvement, not just their successes or outcomes. This reinforces the value of hard work and persistence.
4. Set Realistic Goals: Help your child set achievable goals and break down tasks into manageable steps. Celebrate the small victories along the way to motivate them to persist.
5. Teach Delayed Gratification: Encourage activities that require patience and sustained effort, helping children learn to wait for rewards and understand that some goals require time to achieve.
6. Share Stories of Perseverance: Narratives of individuals who have overcome challenges can be incredibly inspiring for children. Share stories from your life, books, or history about people who demonstrated perseverance.
7. Create a Supportive Environment: Ensure your child knows that it's okay to fail and that failure is often part of the learning process. Encourage them to try again and let them know you're there to support them, not to judge their failures.

Early Dismissals: Procedure for Grades PreK-6
If a student in grades PreK-6 needs an early departure from school:
- A written note must be submitted to the classroom teacher in advance.
- The parent or guardian is then required to personally visit the elementary office to sign their child out. Reason for the early departure must be written on the sign out sheet along with the parent's signature.
Your child's safety is of paramount importance to us, and these protocols are in place to ensure that. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.
From the Nurse's Office
New York State law requires that any medication to be administered in a school setting, including over-the-counter medications, must have appropriate documentation from a physician. The law also provides guidelines for the administration of medication in schools to ensure the safety of students.
For the safety and well-being of all our students, we would like to remind everyone that any and all medications that require a doctor's script must be delivered directly to the health office by a parent or guardian. It's essential that medications are not sent with students or through others. This ensures the correct handling, dosage, and administration of the medication.
We understand the challenges and inconveniences that might arise from this, but the safety of our students remains our utmost priority. If you have questions or need to make specific arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact the health office.
๐ Elementary School Arrival Information ๐
The elementary school doors open at 7:50 a.m. Classes begin at 8:00 a.m. We want to ensure that everyone has a smooth start to their day.
For parent drop-off, please use the designated area in front of the school. Students and their families should not be walking between our parked buses. It is not safe walking from the parking lot and along the buses to get to our elementary doors. Please help our drivers by approaching the buildings from the front of the school.
Punctuality is important. Students who enter the building after 8:00 a.m. will be considered tardy. Let's all work together to ensure everyone gets the most out of their learning time.
