Staff Spotlight
Mallory Spanjer, social studies teacher
Q: What's the best book you've read recently?
A: I'm currently re-reading "The Fellowship of the Ring" and I can't get over it. I find that each year as December approaches I fall back on books I've read many times and love the feel of. This one takes me right back to middle school, which were actually magical years for me. I'll also take this opportunity to say that this is the greatest movie of all time.
Q: What is your favorite animal?
A: Cow! Specifically a black and white dairy cow. I've loved these lovable creatures ever since receiving my beloved stuffed Ruby from the Easter Bunny when I was two. In first grade I memorized the Robert Louis Stevenson poem "The Friendly Cow" as an extra credit assignment. Can still recite upon request.
Q: What show are you currently binge-watching?
A: I'm a sucker for most things from the BBC. Right now it's "Call the Midwife" but it could just as easily be "Doctor Who," "Shetland," or about anything else.
Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: When I was in middle school I was certain that I would be a SportsCenter anchor. I was professional-sports obsessed as a teenager and dedicated at least an hour every night and again each morning to this show. I'm pleased to report that, though I still love and follow some sports, I now do so in a healthier and age-appropriate way :)
Q: What was your favorite subject in school?
A: English was by far my favorite subject. I devoured our assigned books and essays and poems and looked forward to that class every day. It just made sense to me. "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" was transformative and changed my thinking in many many ways.

Students compete at Regional Science Fair, The Gresham Barlow STEM Expo
Every Corbett student in the competition won awards, three projects move on to state
Corbett HS students showed off their talent in STEM at this year's Regional Science Fair, The Gresham Barlow STEM Expo, this Friday, March 8th. Every Corbett science student that competed took home awards in their categories, and three projects won a spot in the State competition for a chance to join Team Oregon at the NW Science Expo, to be held at Portland State University on Friday April 5th. We are so excited to see Corbett represented for the first time at this annual state competition, and will be cheering them on at State! Go Cards!
11th grade students Haley Potts and Samantha Blume (pictured) won 1st place in their category, the Ricoh sustainable development award, and they will be advancing to State with their project: "Investigating the effect of mutualistic fungi mycorrhiza concentration on plant growth and overall health"
11th grade students Allison Arnold and Anastaysia Brixey-Margeson (pictured) won 2nd place in their category and will be advancing to State with their project: "What is the effect of various plant based materials on the quality of homemade ink-making process"
10th Grade student Jack Kirnan won Honorable Mention in his category and is advancing to State with his project titled: "The effect of temperature on the rate of a chemical reaction using the iodine clock reaction."
11th grade students Malaya Cannon-Peterson and Lilly Christensen won the Outstanding Project in In Vitro Biology award sponsored by the Society of In Vitro Biology.
10th grade student Leena Saied (pictured) won the Science Champion Award sponsored by the US Agency for International Development with her project: "Investigating the correlation between environmental attitudes and environmental actions using Chi-Squared analysis"
11th grade student Bailey Sample won the Outstanding Geoscience Project Award sponsored by the Association of Women Geoscientists with her project: "Investigating the effect of pH on growth of Chlorella vulgaris algae"
Seniors: pay for cap & gown by March 21
$50 payable in the grade school office
Graduation is approaching! On Wednesday May 29, the parade of cars will start at 7 pm and the ceremony will start at 8 pm. Seniors need to pay for their cap and gown by Wednesday, March 21. $50 payable by cash or check in the grade school office.
Why are there signs all over the high school??!
AP US Government’s Mock Election is in full swing
Students in AP Gov form political parties and name their parties (note: the party name cannot be a name connected to any current or historic political party).
The parties then create their party platforms, stating the political beliefs and policy positions of the party (must include at least 12 specific policy positions).
After all party members sign off on the platform, parties select their candidates.
Now comes the fun part: convince people to vote for you. Any student or staff member of Corbett High School is able to vote in the mock election. Students in AP Gov use a variety of strategies to get votes (radio ads, posters, social media, etc).
A note from Mr. Cooper: All advertising must be accurate. You can't make stuff up about opponents. You may attack policies, but not people. Even in a mock-election, school rules apply. Also for Pete's sake, this is a mock election, being a jerk isn't worth it.
The (mock) election will be held March 21.
New Student Representatives to the School Board
Congratulations Kaylee Moore and Haley Potts
Juniors Kaylee Moore and Haley Potts were selected as the next student representatives to the Corbett School Board.
