A Message from Dr. Di Nicola
Good evening, JLS Mustang Families!
This past week proved to be one of the finest in JL Simpson Middle School's history...without a doubt! Check out these updates below:
Month of the Military Child and Arab-American Heritage Month Spirit Day Celebrations
We truly appreciate your family efforts in engaging your Mustangs in our frequent spirit day events...and you showed up yet again for us as our Mustangs did a great job celebrating Month of the Military Child on Monday, April 15, Tuesday, April 16, and Wednesday, April 17 in addition to Arab-American Heritage Month Unity Day on Friday, April 19.
AMLE School of Distinction: JL Simpson Has Submitted Its Application!
JL Simpson Middle School has submitted its application for candidacy as an AMLE School of Distinction for SY 2024-2025! We appreciate the efforts that many of our students, staff, families, central office, and community representatives donated as a part of this initiative (especially this past week as part of our virtual site visit) as JL Simpson MS is very deserving of this type of honor! We will keep you posted on our progress!
Mrs. Kimberly Poole Is Named LCPS Teacher of the Year
Out of fifty-eight (58) applications submitted by all LCPS schools this year, we are proud to announce that Mrs. Kimberly Poole has been selected as our Loudoun County Public Schools Teacher of the Year! Without your contributions as our educational community alongside those of our students and staff, both past and present, we would not have been able to generate the application for Mrs. Poole in the thoroughly honorable manner that we were able to perform....so THANK YOU! Please read more in the Mustang Messenger below about our celebration of Mrs. Poole both now and in the coming weeks!
Crosstown Volleyball vs. Smart's Mill MS: More Than 40 Have Signed Up!
We are so proud to have more than forty students who have signed up to take part in the JLS Crosstown Volleyball vs. Smart's Mill MS event on Tuesday, May 7 at Tuscarora HS....and we are still looking for more Mustangs to participate! Check out the info in the Mustang Messenger below!
And now...onto this coming week!
National Student Leadership Week - April 22 - 26, 2024
As part of National Student Leadership Week, we will be celebrating the incredible efforts of so many of our students in paving pathways of leadership that inspire their classmates to rise to the occasion in academic, extracurricular, and service-oriented experiences that make Simpson shine continuously in our community. We jump start the week with an advisory activity created by our very own JLS Student Advisory Planning Team, a group of students from all three grade levels who have developed a Team-Building activity for engagement with their peers during advisory time on Monday and Tuesday this week. Check out the graphic below for more information about our celebrations!
National Junior Honor Society: Membership To Be Announced Early This Week!
Our Faculty Council has completed the review process of the proposed National Junior Honor Society Membership for the current school year. Membership will be announced to both prospective members and their families early this week...so please watch your accounts!
Earth Day: Monday, April 22, 2024: WEAR BLUE AND GREEN!
In honor of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, 2024, we encourage our Mustangs to wear BLUE and GREEN or an Earth Day t-shirt to honor this special occasion in remembering to support environmental protection.
3rd Quarter Honor Roll Assemblies This Week!
Check out the information on this week's Honor Roll assemblies for Quarter 3 below in this edition of the Mustang Messenger! Please remember that honorees are to report directly to their advisory classes first to receive their certificates and will head to the assembly upon the announcement by school leadership.
SOL and MAP Testing Begin This Week!
The Spring End of Course (EOC) Standards of Learning (SOL) Testing season is arriving this week with the new English: Integrated Reading and Writing Assessment on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 with make-ups on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Note that this assessment is only for Grade 8. See a graphic below for all of our forthcoming Spring SOL dates for all grade levels!
MAP Growth Assessment Testing (Spring Window) occurs this week on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 (Grades 6-7: English: Reading) and Thursday, April 25, 2024 (Grades 6-7-8: Mathematics) as part of the LCPS requirement in aligning yearlong growth measurement to support student achievement in both of these core proficiency domains.
Please encourage your Mustangs to continue to do their best on their SOLs and MAP testing as these measurements provide us as educators with the best possible tools in determining both support and enrichment for students' studies in the future, including the high school time frame of their educational journey.
How can I help to prepare my Mustang for Spring SOLs at home?
SOL Practice Resources and Tips in our Grade-Level Weekly Updates: Click here to view our weekly grade-level updates...and you will see a special resource at the top of each grade-level page with key information to support the success of your Mustangs on this spring's SOLs!
Wishing you all a spectactular week ahead as JL Simpson MS continues to shine with HONORABLE, ENGAGED, RESPECTFUL, and DETERMINED Mustangs leading the charge!

Join the PTO Board
The current PTO board is coming to the end of their long tenure and we are looking for new parents and teachers to step into vacant board positions.
We have one returning board member that is willing to spend next year passing along everything the board does. Without a minimum of a President, Secretary and Treasurer the PTO will have to dissolve.
There are many programs and ways that the PTO assists the school that will not continue without a board.
More information about the duties of each position can be found here.

Virtual Author Visit During 7th Grade English
Simpson is excited to welcome award-winning author Marsha Forchuk Skrypuch, author of "Winterkill" and "Making Bombs for Hitler," on April 24th and April 25th for a virtual visit with our 7th grade English classes. Ms. Skrypuch will talk about her transition from a dyslexic struggling reader to a successful writer, and how she combines stories from her family history in Ukraine and detailed and thorough research to create books that students can't put down. The virtual session will also include a Q&A where students can ask Ms. Skrypuch about her life and work.
Ms. Skrypuch's visit is made possible with funding from HREC Education (the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium in Toronto), a project of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta, and the Nora Roberts Foundation. For more information about Ms. Skrypuch, visit her website.
If you DO NOT want your 7th grade student to attend Ms. Skrypuch's visit, please fill out this Permission Click Opt-Out form. https://permission.click/KAnrO/int
A selection of Ms. Skrypuch's books are available through Simpson's online bookstore, offered through Bookworm Central. A portion of proceeds benefits the Simpson Library.
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Everett, JLS Librarian, at jeannine.everett@lcps.org.
Updated Respiratory Illness Guide
In accordance with updated respiratory virus guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, LCPS has updated its guidance specifically relating to COVID-19 but also applying to the flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Per this updated guidance, students or staff who have symptoms of, test positive for or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when they are fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication AND their symptoms have improved or resolved. The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer required.
Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses and you are unsure if they should go to school.

SNAP Provides Eligible Families Access to Healthy Food
The SNAP in Schools initiative from the Virginia Department of Social Service, which is based on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), helps develop partnerships to bridge the gap of food insecurity among school-aged children. The objectives of SNAP in Schools are to reduce food insecurity in school-aged children, to increase the number of students directly certified for free school meals through SNAP, and to increase the number of students eligible without application for the summer EBT program.
Please advise families who could benefit from this program to access the CommonHelp portal link to submit online SNAP applications.

Congratulations Ms. Hoey Johnson - SHINE Recognition!
Ms. Hoey Johnson, our amazing music and drama director has received a SHINE (Spotlighting Heroes in Education Recognition Program) submimission from one of her students!
Here is what Parker said about her:
Mrs. Hoey-Johnson is an absolutely amazing teacher. She is so fun and every class is a blast. I normally come into her class without a smile and my head down, but she always finds a way to make sure I leave with a smile and my chin up. She helps me with my anxiety and compliments me all of the time. She is so funny. You can tell that the things she says are genuine.
*If you know a Hero in Education please consider recognizing them with a SHINE submission - see directions below*
SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education Recognition Program
HRTD is excited to launch SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education, a new recognition program that aims to tell the stories of the incredible work happening throughout the division. We encourage schools to promote SHINE both inside their buildings between peers as well as with their school communities through newsletters, websites and social media as all parents, students, staff and community members are welcome to submit a nomination. Each month, Loudoun Education Foundation will choose one submission to provide additional acknowledgement and a special gift.
How it works:
We are seeking submissions for LCPS staff members at schools, central office and support locations who:
Have gone above and beyond in a situation
Have inspired others or have a heartwarming story
Are doing something unique or creative that is leading to results
In general, ANY great news!
Complete the submission form (It’s short and easy!)
The Employee Recognition office notifies the nominee as well as their supervisor of the submission
The story may be placed on the Employee Recognition webpage.
Our goal is to place a spotlight on the hundreds of positive interactions taking place in LCPS each day...and especially at JLS! We look forward to seeing your celebrations of our JLS Mustang Professionals throughout 2023-2024!
