THREE SCOOPS!
SCOOP ONE
Beginning Wednesday, we will be moving backpacks back to lockers. Prior to COVID, students always kept their backpacks or bags in their lockers. During the pandemic, we allowed them to help keep materials separated, clean, isolated, etc. and we had just never moved back from this change. Given some patterns in behavior, we have decided to revert back to the former backpack expectations (in lockers from first bell to last bell). This decision is not the result of a singular event, rather we are seeing all sorts of backpack distractions from students bring vapes or other prohibited items and bags full of beauty supplies, to days’ worth of snacks and sneaky places to keep personal tech devices. None of these things aid in focused education and that's what we are really here to accomplish. Furthermore, the safety of our staff and students is always a top priority! Storing backpacks in lockers is already a practice at some RPS schools. We also know from Kellogg's history that kids can manage storing bags and materials in their lockers and getting to and from classes during a 4-minute passing time. We will, of course, be flexible, as we all settle in to a new routine, but we fully expect that kids will be acclimated within the first week or so.
Thanks to those that have emailed for clarification on some specifics.
- If your child has a medical need to carry something (insulin pump, using crutches, carrying an EpiPen, etc.), please reach out to a principal for special permission.
- Students are permitted to carry binders, water bottles, and a pencil pouch.
- We will be flexible about tardies for the first week or so while everyone gets into an adjusted routine.
- Backpacks are not permitted at lunch. Lunch bags can be stored in lockers other than on the way to and from lunch.
- No backpacks are needed for PE since our locker rooms are closed for construction so no kids are changing right now anyway.
